You UT folks need to put down the shine. You have had way too much. Unless Tennessee has changed since my last trip ( 4 months ago) thru your hillbilly heaven it’s still a shite hole

All of West Virginia is in the Appalachians so yeah, they are a poor state especially with the crack down on coal.

I'm sure all the industry in western Kentucky more than offsets the Appalachian slums.

Sadly, the most impoverished area of Appalachia is actually Eastern Kentucky. A shame, because it's geographically the most beautiful part of the statem, perhaps outside of our horse farms here in Central KY.

I thank God that our legislature resisted mining back in the day. We'd be right there with Bell Co and Harlan if we hadn't.

It's a shame Kentucky still hasn't figured out how to capitalize on the natural beauty of the eastern part of the state like Tennessee has.

I prefer to live where you don’t have areas you have to avoid. And I kinda feel that’s the way most folks view it.

It's a joke, based on an old myth.

The myth is that some company wanted to build a plant or refinery around Vicksburg. Huey Long said that's fine, but you won't be able to get there, and built the old bridge in Baton Rouge too low for ocean vessels to pass.

It is true that ocean vessels cannot pass that bridge, but due to a bunch of geological witchcraft that I don't understand, the river can't be dredged north of Baton Rouge, so it's barge traffic only.

In Texas, it is up there for sure.

What part of what state is the real question though.

NW Arkansas routinely lands in the nicest places to live in the country... but a great deal of the state is an economic basket case.

Whether you love them, or hate them, urban areas in Texas generate a ton of money... but you have a vast area of small towns that are slowly but surely dying.

The world has changed. It isn't what state sucks and what doesn't anymore. It is what area sucks and what doesn't.

Though all of West Virginia blows despite its wonderful scenery.

I used to love going to Daniel Boone State Park (not sure what it's called now). The beauty is there and you don't have to deal with the crowds.

As for capitalizing.... True story. Middlesboro was a planned city and was meant to be great. It was developed along with the Harrogate (in TN) to be a go to town and vacation spot for the ultra wealthy. Harrogate hosted a Four Seasons (Mark Twain even stayed there as did Cornelius Vanderbilt) but development went to pot because of floods and fires in Middlesboro (and you know how prone to flooding Middlesboro still is - but that's because it's literally built on top of meteor crater which is why it's so flat despite being surrounded by mountains).

At any rate, the Four Seasons and Middlesboro project couldn't recover and the property for the Four Seasons was sold to LMU.

But once upon a time, that entire area was set to be a playground for the rich because it's so damned beautiful.

I would venture to guess there is no one on this board, no one who has been nailed down to where they live. For Pete’s sake people, if you think so little of where you live as you act like you do, pick your worthless arse up and move somewhere that you can be happy. Life is too short to grumble about where you live.

Mississippi, Oklahoma (soon), Alabama, and Louisiana all have compelling arguments.

Corpus is a shithole, the fishing isn't special enough to change that fact.

I've been in Southern Missouri quite a bit for work the last couple months and it's very underrated, imo. I would live there in a heartbeat over anywhere in Mississippi or Louisiana

That's my region, never intend to leave. I do like Eastern TN quite a bit and used to work in the hill country area of TX those would be high considerations if I did leave.

Keep thinking this and stay out. I like my state having a bad reputation. It keeps the liberal a-holes out.
