Malzahn still not ready to name White starter

If JJ starts against Kentucky I will abandon all hope
If he benches Sean White and starts JJ against Kentucky with JJ not having earned it at all, he will lose the whole team. They will see how partial he is to a player instead of doing what needs to be done to win games as a team. This season is completely lost if JJ starts.

They both suck...but at least JJ doesn't have training wheels on.
This is where I'm at. JJ might turn it over 3 times but at least he gives us a chance if he doesn't turn the ball over (big IF I know) but I think it's a chance we have to take.
We can not beat any of the decent teams left on our schedule running the ball 50 times and throwing swing passes all game.

Why are we arguing about this? SW has played serviceable. If we loose the fumbles many on here would be singing a different tune. JJ also played serviceable if those 6 interceptions had been dropped.

I saw 6 of 10 passing, two drops, one drop would have been a TD, one miscommunication. I saw a huge throw at the end of the half. I saw a coaching staff throw the ball twice in the second half and let the other team get back in it. I was at the game, so you get a different perspective. But Sean competes, the offense is more fluid and he runs better than JJ.

I agree. gus has to give Sean a chance.

Said it in the other thread that Gus doesn't think White can throw the deep ball. Ive seen him
Really? We threw the ball (10) times yesterday. fricking (10) times.
The one deep ball I remember him throwing was the Jason Smith. It was slightly off target (over the inside shoulder and not the outside shoulder), but it hit the WR in the nada and he dropped it. Not sure about any other throws.
TBH, it looks like Gus is either scared to let White do anything or is holding him back until later in the season. I can't decide which it is.

Also had a predetermined out and up where the other two receivers didn't even run routes. And there was a jump ball to duke that was defended well.

Exactly......I've wondered the same thing. White plays his heart out but we needed a true dual-threat QB with an real arm. Gus has set us up for failure trying to prove he doesn't need a running QB for this offense to be successful. Gus's ego will be his downfall.

My overall impression is that he is limiting Sean not because he lacks ability, but because he is trying to avoid a qb controversy. Remember JJ still has another year left, and he has all the physical tools needed for GM's offense. I'm sure there is some thinking that they can correct all of this next spring and go into 2016 with JJ as the starter. The only problem with that plan is if you really open the offense up and allow Sean to run it, what do you do if he really shines? It's all about leaving the door open for JJ to be the starting qb in 2016. If Sean shines or at the least shows he is effective, then JJ probably transfers.

I said yesterday that the weather would give Gus a reason not to throw. I knew he would keep it on the ground and not take chances. The problem with that though is we need to work on our passing game. Instead we put it off for another day, another game instead of taking advantage of real game situations to get better. We know Barber can run, but just pounding him all game does not make us a better team.

That seems like a win for everyone. JJ obviously couldn't handle the pressure of being THE man. He may have a chance with less exposure. Shady White has looked better running and passing w limited opportunities.
Posted on 10/4/15 at 8:37 am to Blizzard of Chizz
Exactly. White needs some live reps throwing the ball. I'm not sure why we weren't trying to score 1,000 points yesterday. Its mind boggling.

The passing game needs a shirt load of work and we squandered a great opportunity to do so.

If he's limiting a QB for these reasons, then he needs to be canned right now. These are moronic reasons to limiting what you're calling for a QB.

half way through the season and this a-hole is talking about how we are STARTING to get answers...I am now officially in the "this a-hole is in over his head" group. this abortion is looking more pathetic by the minute and every minuscule semblance of progress on the field seems to be overtaken by our coaches clueless comments. this guy is pissing me off.
Posted on 10/4/15 at 8:48 am to 3 Dimes Down
frick Gus, defenses have played us the same way all season. He is refusing to let the QB throw downfield. White only had 10 attempts in the game.

As moronic as the play calling has been? I don't know how else to explain a 1 receiver pass route. I don't know how to explain not feeding an incredible talent like Duke the football. He wants the damn ball, give it to him!! Who gives a shite if he has a bad attitude? I would be a bitch too if I had first round talent and you couldn't get me the ball more than a couple times a game. ..... And short of a monsoon yesterday I would have slung the rock around the damn field and gotten White as many passing reps as possible before going into Kentucky.

Completely agree with all of that.

He has below average arm strength.
The sample size of passes is too small to make that assessment. The pass to Smith looked pretty good to me. I'm not saying he has tremendous arm strength, I'm just saying he hasn't had the opportunity to show it at this point.
ETA- I agree that yesterday was the perfect opportunity for live passing reps.

It's all play calling. This offensive staff has managed to ruin Jeremy and train a passing QB like White to not throw the ball.
This team is playing scared to screw up and everybody is pressing.
Time to relax and play- Gus offense is supposed to be fun- it looks boring and painful at the moment.
