Malzahn still not ready to name White starter

quote:

"I thought he competed; he did some good things," Malzahn said. "We'll take this thing week-to-week like we've been doing it. We're starting to kind of get good answers to the questions that we needed."

If JJ starts against Kentucky I will abandon all hope

Said it in the other thread that Gus doesn't think White can throw the deep ball. Ive seen him attempt 3 now and I'm inclined to agree with him. For all of JJ's faults he does throw a much better deep ball. Gus thinks for us to be competitive against the better teams we need that element in our offense.

Why would we sign a qb who can't throw the deep ball?

In Gus' defense, it seems like Sean has about as many fumbles as JJ has interceptions, though we've seemed to have been lucky in recovering them. We won't continue to be that lucky however and, in the end, turnovers are turnovers. Guess he'll have to pick his poison.

They both suck...but at least JJ doesn't have training wheels on.

Nope but he damn sure needs them. Take them off and he falls on his face about 90% of the time.

Guess we all missed the deep ball jason Smith dropped. Also the play where it looked like the receivers stopped on there routes. Defense was the let down in this game. Period. White did alright and the playcalling didn't allow for him to throw down field. The play calling was horrendous once again.

Maybe you still take a kid who excels at a lot of other QB things and really, really wants to come to your school

Maybe you think you can teach him to throw a deep ball better with time

Maybe teams shouldn't rely on the deep ball as a major component of their offensive production because it's a high risk play on a good day, so taking a QB with good instincts and technique anyway is a nobrainer

There are lots of fricking reasons why that might be the case

Is anyone actually confident that Gus knows how to evaluate what a QB can or cant do? His passing offense is bush league. I'm really not sure he has a clue; he clearly "thought" that JJ was A1 going into this season. I can just picture Gus and Lashlee patting each other on the back all offseason waiting to unleash Cam 2.0 on the SEC .

I think the answer is you think you have the qb situation covered until he is a 4th year junior and maybe by then he has filled out and he can throw a good enough deep ball. If he doesn't you've signed 3 or more qbs behind him and one of them play.

I love your sig dude, but these are stupid fricking answers. AU is not a 1-aa school looking for somebody to plug in a few years down the road after you "teach him to throw a deep ball".

Ken Mastrole (White's personal QB coach) thinks he can throw the deep ball just fine; in fact it was one of his biggest points he brought up when he discussed how White could help this offense when JJ was initially benched. But what does he know? He only played QB in the NFL, he's not a GENIUS like Gus.

I'm just going to assume Gus is going to pull a Gus and start JJ again.

I was told by excellent authority tonight that a ball that hits a WR directly in the hands and is dropped is the QBs fault.

The day he starts shite-for-brains Jeremy Johnson again, I just may give up too.

His personal qb coach said nice things about him. Woopty fricking doo. We've both seen him throw in 2 games now. He has below average arm strength.

Whatever DOES NOT make sense.....that'll be Gus's decision.

Are you saying that due to his overthrown passes? Jesus, this board is on another level.

Agreed. Skills challenge leading up to the Under Armor AA game, Shady White was in the top group on deep ball distance (haha). Also saw a video from when he got to AU throwing it into a garbage can from about 40 yds out.

I could see Gus being gun shy after what happened w JJ. He probably doesn't want to put him into a position where his confidence gets shaken, while also keeping SW thinking his job isn't safe.
