Don't yall understand -- there is no clear upgrade out there. Yeah Gus looks like shite now and anybody would be an upgrade, but be careful what you wish for (UTe). AU isn't all that great of a job like some of you think -- yeah lots of money, but number 2 in its own state
THat said -- lets see how Jeff Brohm gets along this year...

Wrong

Miss State has a better coach. Hell, UAB and JSU has a better one.

You're an idiot. AU is still in the SEC big 6. The 2nd best school in the state of Alabama is better than the best school in Mississippi, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Also better than A&M, Arkansas, Vandy, Mizzou.

He wasn't comparing it to

Mississippi, South Carolina, and Kentucky

He was saying AU isn't a "great enough" job to hire coaches away from other top programs

Which is true. We've never done it nor had interest from said coaches

There are a handful of programs in the country that a coach would likely never leave for AU or ANY other program.

Michigan
Ohio State
Alabama
Notre Dame
Penn State
USC
Texas
FSU

These are generally blue blood programs. Also, a current SEC coach likely wouldn't leave UGA, TN, Florida or LSU for another SEC program.

With that said, that leaves 100+ D1 schools that AU could likely go out and poach a coach. However, the pool diminishes greatly when whoever comes in realizes he has to compete against Bama annually on field and in recruiting as well as rest of SEC.

To your point that we haven't had interest, sure, but we also have a smaller sample size than a lot of schools. And it's not like Saban was hired away from a top program. Bret is really the only coach who left another established program for another head coaching job that I would argue is a step down from Wisconsin.

Why do people think Jimbo would leave FSU?

Love him or hate him but Finebaum is WELL connected and has ALWAYS said Jimbo would leave FSU in a hurry for the right job. I really think he WANTED the LSU job, but they were too cheap with all their financial problems there.

Jimbo would love competing with Saban and even made the comment that he wished he had gotten a shot against Bama in the Natty instead of us. The question is: how much did he enjoy his time on the Plains? He has always been who Yella Fella wants.

If our big money guys had their crap together we would've had Jimbo when we hired Gus.

You've got a 1999 mindset... when it comes to head coaching hires, the game has completely changed over the last decade.

Every single Power 5 program has boat loads of money to spend on coaches. The days of a major program like AU stealing a successful coach from a lesser P5 program are all but over. There will be exceptions, but that's the new normal... get used to it.

YUP

This is why Gary Patterson never left. TCU kept matching and raising. He has seen plenty of interviews and is one hell of a coach.

If you think money is the only factor then you're kidding yourself. AU can outspend all but the most elite schools and there's also the matter of program visibility, history, etc.

It's not just money for head coaching salaries we're talking about... its money for everything -- assistant salaries, facilities, recruiting budgets, training, etc. Sure, we can outspend most, but for the most part the benefit is negligible.

In today's environment, the two things that separate AU from most is fan support and recruiting territory... and the former works against us a lot of times when it comes to hires.
