As I said a few posts above, they have the capability to recruit like one.

Also, Bama went 3-8 in 2000 and Michigan went 3-9 in 2008. It happens.

All bets are off should we finish the season with 8 or more losses, as JL wants to see that the team hasn't 100% quit on the coaches before the above decision is even remotely made. If the team completely quits we'll take the best option available and roll with it.

They quit 2 weeks ago.

There's definite interest there from both parties, but I don't think it's gone much beyond that at this point. I think we've talked to his representation to see if he's even willing to leave, and from my understanding the answer was good as long as the job security, and not $$$ necessarily, is there. He's #1 in several big minds on The Hill, don't think his time at TTech is a factor.

The good news (aside from them beginning to reach out) is that they think CBB is putting out feelers himself and searching for a much more "low key" landing spot for he and his family until the baby is grown more. He wants more time with his family and less spotlight, the losses piling up are more of the last straw than the major reason

I've said for a while now that I just have this feeling that Bert leaves after this year of his own volition. He looks like a train wreck and appears completely disinterested, and you add a baby into the mix and the stress of an SEC job and I'd be shocked if he's back next year if even given the opportunity. I wouldn't fault him at all for saying "eff this shite, I have a wife and kid to think about."

Bad news - Long and co. are willing to keep him if they can't find the "near perfect" candidate and get him locked down. Long has several key factors he's looking for and thinks they have time and resources to be choosy. Something was said in a convo with Bob Stoops (?) that really impacted Long and made him ratchet up the quality of candidate he's seeking.

I'm just not sure I buy that, since it would be tantamount to career suicide at UA for Long.

Fan base enthusiasm has fallen through the floor. We simply can't afford (literally and figuratively) to open a newly renovated stadium in 2018 with zero fan excitement due to a lame duck coaching staff that they we out in 2 years ago. Quite literally the only way to get that buy-in from the fans and generate excitement for 2018 is to hire a new coach (granted, you can't shite the bed on the hire).

Also, Bret Bielema was the "perfect candidate" when he was hired, according to Long. What exactly does that entail?

Don't recall Tuberville necessarily lighting it up.

We've gotten top 15 classes before. Gus could do that consistently here, no doubt in my mind.

For as much irrational hate for Gus, there is just as much irrational love

We need a system in place like New England. We could get one 5* and some 3 and 4*s around him as long as the system is solid.
We've already done it with BP.

Top 20. Whatever.

Gus could easily pull top 20 classes here year in and year out*

I think that's kinda the point, he believed CBB was the perfect candidate at the time for whatever reason and look how badly it failed. I think that would only make JL MORE cautious and picky this go-round, because the program and JL's future itself can't afford another dud hire. The immense pressure is there, he's gonna have to really do his homework this time.

I could see his line of thinking being that stability with the same coach for another year is better than rushing into the best of a bunch of bad options and having to live with it for 3+ seasons.

Regardless I think this is more the doomsday option than anything. They've reached out to Leach, who isn't perfect by any means; obviously JL isn't thumbing his nose at ALL options and "near perfect" doesn't mean anything other than near perfect for us.

It's not irrational. In fact, can't stand the dude and his man rack and douchy vest.

But he's the best option out there that would come, has ties and has had success in the SEC and the south recruiting.

He fields a good defense, runs the ball and generally avoids major scandal.

Ya'll want to take a risk on some up and comer with ZERO ties here and most likely won't come, by all means. Keep smoking the pipe.

He makes the most sense and it would mean something to him. All the others would see it as a stepping stone.

TBH- the irrational love is what drove me to irrational hate.

I dealt with the sociopath fans near the end of the HDN's tenure so they can deal with my type now.

Chad Morris recruiting 100% Texas dudes is not the recipe for success here either.

He'd bounce for the A&M job in a heartbeat as well. Ya'll are crazy.

Hate to say it but we're by the balls here and are only semi decent option is getting on the GUS BUS.

I'm not on the Morris train really. I've actually walked that back and like him less than norvell at this point (who I have said is not in the mold of coach I want)

Gus would recruit better than Bert. He would average like 20-23 where as Bert averages 25. He will not get us to like 15. Is what it is. He would honest to god be HDN 2.0 as far as success, and ability to hang around for far too long.

I will admit that he can evaluate talent far and away above Bert. Especially on the D line, but I doubt he can recruit those guys here. Unless we start cheating like auburn.

Gus has not won more than 8 after his first year. With 5 years of top 10 classes. What is he going to do here with half the talent????

No, he is the safest option. Those are not the same thing.

Ok, now you are sounding like Jeff Long

All the others would see it as a stepping stone.

If someone is using our school as a stepping stone then they are winning big here. A bigger school isn't stealing our coach for winning 8 games a year.
