I don't think anyone is going to contend that it isn't DeBoer's system. It clearly is. It's just silly to act like we have promoted some brilliant young coaching mind who is great at the job despite there being zero evidence of that whatsoever to this point. As SoG said, at best his grade at Indiana is an incomplete due to factors outside of his control and we're getting a total wild card here. But getting excited about that is like living that scene from Family Guy where Peter passes on the boat for the mystery box that could be anything, even a boat.

The OC position for a guy like DeBoer (like with Kiffin or Heupel) really comes down to general play calling. The system, the development, the practices, etc......that stuff is all set on a template and run by the guy who set up the system. The big play situations will get input from the boss. The early script will be written during the week with input from the boss.

The 4th drive of the game early in the 2nd quarter is where the OC is going to be the most glaring. He's going to be completely doing that on his own, off script, with minimal input from the head coach. The flow of the game is going to be up to him, and that's where his value will lie (positively or negatively).

Compare that to when he was at Indiana working for a defensive minded head coach - all of the above was entirely his responsibility. It's a very different situation.

This isn’t just Sheridan on his own, it’s going to be three people having input. No one seems to be mentioning the input that will come from Sheppard. I think that will be something to get excited about.

As long as they're scoring points, I don't care who has what title. Show an explosive offense in '24 and elite offensive recruits will be lining up.

Yes. Shepherd was passing game coordinator at Washington.

I think it’s… fine, but I also think it’s a downgrade. Definitely true that we’re all making pretty uneducated guesses though, and who knows how much a downgrade (or an upgrade, hell) would really matter anyway. Gotta figure DeBoer himself is the biggest factor in how the offense will perform, like others are saying.

What year was that?

Because the year when Nick Sheridan took over... Indiana's offense was good under him!

He called some good games against great teams.

Believe he took over in 2020, Indiana only played about half a season. The wheels came off in 2021, and he was fired at the end of 2021. Injuries, OL issues, not helped by their Defense sucking also.

In his only full year as an OC, only 6 teams were worse than Indiana in total offense. What games did you think he did a great job in?

I'll give you full credit. You go full Gump.

Nick Sheridan did a great job in his first year as OC. I understand they played only so many games but what I look at is...the in game play calling, the adjustments, creativity, QB mechanics, and the personnel.

I'm just saying...

He did good in 2020 vs decent teams.

But you also told people they needed to do their research while not knowing how bad Indiana performed

I'd like to have seen a more inspiring OC hire from a coach we're paying $10 million a year...but it's just off season fodder right now. I'll reserve judgement until they've actually played some games.

As others have said , he wants to run his offense so he is not going to bring in someone to run their stuff. Also, most OCs in CFB know this so it limits the pool to people he is familiar with.. the TE and OL hire will be a better judge of his job performance IMO

Passing game coordinator is going nowhere. Sheridan has experience in this offense and has a great offensive head coach working with him. It will be fine.

Sheridan has been fired twice. Neither coinciding with a head coaching change. Maybe this works out, but to pretend his track record isn’t a concern because you did “research” is ridiculous.

Looking at the stats from 2020 and 21 when Penix was in the game, IU was pretty good. When he was out, they struggled. Is that a product of talent or lack of development?

In 2020, yes. Penix absolutely looked like a future Heisman winner.

In 2021 IU went through 4 quarterbacks.

You can only develop some guys so far. The 4th string QB at a school like IU is not going to be very good.

I agree and that’s really my point. The world isn’t burning. I think we have a lot more talent than Jack Tuttle or Donaven McCulley.
