Speculation that DeBoer may call his own plays and hire OL coach. Name the two in staff as co OC to keep them around

I think it’s the worst idea possible.

I agree. I don't think the HC calling plays is a good thing. You gotta learn to delegate in jobs like this one. Even Saban delegated defensive playcalling.

quote:deboer delegates some of the head coach admin, organization, and recruiting stuff to Courtney Morgan the gm. If he gives one or more of the current offensive coaches coordinator duties (Sheppard co-oc/passing game Sheridan co-oc/running game) to help plan and run practices, I don't see why he couldn't call his own plays at least to start. Also, we probably would have been better on defense the last five seasons if Saban was calling plays instead of Pete. Then you have the option to ease someone like Sheppard into play calling during the season, which he hasn't done before. Nobody knows DeBoer's system as well as grubb did, except for DeBoer. We have a tough schedule early in the year, can't afford play calling growing pains.

Right. DeBoer needs some eyes up in the booth that he trusts, but whether that communication from the booth goes to Shepherd or Sheridan on the field (as Rees did with TRob last year) DeBoer will no doubt have to be the key part of the playcalling.

From Ryan Fowler:

This doesn’t excite me, but at least Sheridan will be under DeBoer’s watchful eye. Hopefully it works out.

After talking with several key sources, I expect that Nick Sheridan will be OC at Alabama and JaMarcus Sheppard will be the Co-Offensive Coordinator.
Sheriadan is expected to work with the quarterbacks and call plays
Sheppard is a fast-rising superstar in the coaching profession and will have an expanded role in the offense
Both Sheppard and Sheridan had multiple job offers this off season.

The new OL coach and the other needed coach is more important than who will call a play at this point.

I think this is very positive news. It keeps Sheridan and Sheppard on staff, and keeps Sheppard as the WR coach and involved in the play calling.
DeBoar has made really good hires when putting his staff together so far, he just needs to continue that trend two more times.

Agree. Continuity with staff is very important early in the DeBoer era. Plus naming co OC helps if Sheridan jumps to a different job in the next couple of years you would have another OC waiting.

You don't like the hire because you know nothing about Nick Sheridan.
Do your research. He's good.

I didn’t call it a bad hire or say that he isn’t a good coach. I just said that I’m not excited about it, especially when we thought we were going to have a guy like Ryan Grubb. Obviously I hope that Sheridan does well, though.

Indiana fans would strongly disagree.

I've seen a lot of Indiana fans put most of Sheridan's OC tenure at the fault of the OL/OL Coach.
He's currently an analyst at Auburn, and hope it stays that way.

How many? A handful of them lol.
I don't listen to fans.
The Hornets FANS said Brandon Miller wasn't better than Scoot Henderson lol...I wonder how that's looking now.
I do my own research.

DeBoer took Indiana from 52nd to 42nd in total offense. Sheridan took them from 42nd to 93rd and then to 124th. It may turn out to be fine, but to suggest that there's anything to be excited about is ridiculous.

Grubb wasn’t great at Fresno State as OC in 2019. Likely a lot lost in the details for Grubb and Sheridan as to why. I know Penix was injured a lot while at Indiana. Not sure of personnel issues that Grubb dealt with at Fresno State.

Yea, I'm not gonna freak out about it because it's DeBoer's offense and he was always going to hire a guy well versed in it to replace Grubb. Grubb leaving sucks, the replacement was always going to be a bit of a wild card. Sheridan was clearly not ready to run his own show at Indiana - especially running uphill in terms of talent differential combined with injuries and a terrible offensive line. It will definitely be better with CKD around, but we'll just have to wait and see how he calls a game. Hard to really even react too much given we've never seen this offense at Alabama with these players either way - Grubb or Sheridan.
On the flip side, I love Joka but he's once again doing the bizzarro Shaft thing where he just says a positive thing and then tells anyone who disagrees that they don't get it (whereas Shaft does that with negative things). Sheridan's issues at Indiana may have explanations, but I haven't seen any write ups, blogs, articles or fan comments (and I did a pretty deep dive) from 2021 that claim he was actually an "excellent" OC. There were some that said you can't judge his time there, but that's saying his tenure was an incomplete and not a failure. Nothing said "he was actually really damn good".
Sheridan will probably be fine in the setup he's walking into here. He's experienced with the offense, will practice and gameplan with DeBoer and have him on the headset during games, and I'd expect learned from his toss into the deep end at Indiana. However, if he was hired at a place without DeBoer there would be nothing to make you excited about the hire except hope that the last experience + 2 more years with CKD made him better.
