No one kid themselves, pearl was a homerun hire for auburn.

Now we can hope that South Florida hires grant away. Still Pearl is going to have all the momentum in state recruiting until Grant is fired.

I posted this exact piece in an anchored thread, so I am posting it here because I want add my irrelevant 2 cents worth. I had been saying Pearl to Auburn was going to happen, but folks on here refused to believe me. Auburn wanted that top notch coach because they saw the opportunity to DOMINATE the state of Alabama in basketball with the homerun hire of Pearl. All I want to know is when the Fire Bill Battle thread is coming because I will be all on that bandwagon. For a man that made millions off of college apparel and the backs of athletes, he sure has a poor read of the fan base right now. In fact, I keep calling him Bill "A Lotta Bi**h in 'Em" Battle as our AD. Mal Moore would have never stood for Auburn getting the upper hand.

People need to stop laying all the blame on Battle. Keeping Grant wasn't one man's decision. If we switched ADs with AU, we'd be in the same boat and so would they. AU had 4 losing seasons and finished 49-75 in Barbee's tenure. That's with them playing nobodies in their non-conference schedule year in and year out. They made a change because they HAD to.

We can't really blame Battle on this one. Grant (most likely) was kept this year because of his excessive buyout. If we didn't owe Grant a ton of money we would have let him go after this season. I believe he signed that extension under coach Moore. If that was under Battle's tenure then that is on him, but I think that was on coach Moore. If Battle doesn't even have enough pull to fire a coach that sucks because he was one of Mal Moore's guys then we need to fire him and get a real AD (not some pass the torch type guy).

I love how everyone's idealizing the Moore tenure. He would've done the exact same thing and if you don't believe that it's because you weren't paying attention.

I find it amazing how some of the same people who were praising Battle for hiring Curry are now damning the man. He hasn't even been here a good year. Calm the frick down. We'll bounce back soon.

And that they seem to have overlooked the fact that Auburn hired a lying scoundrel for a coach. He may win in the short run, but the long term effects of his presence aren't so pleasant. ... Not that such stuff bothers the folks down on the plains.

Still, I'm not sure what Battle thinks Grant can do in one year that he hasn't done in the past five.

Based on?

I'm sure we will eventually, but I'm not optimistic about it happening in the next 3 or 4 years as I could see us limping along with CAG that long. Even then there's no guarantee we'll make a hire that can turn things around right away.

Based on the fact that either Grant will get his shite together or be shown the door. Also who's to say Pearl is the only good coach who's available? I'm sure there are plenty of other viable candidates. Some might not be big names. Also who's to say Pearl would've been the right fit for us? Grant was supposed to be a slam dunk hire too.

I think it was a mistake not to fire Grant and go after Pearl. But, the sky is not falling. Just more mediocre basketball for a year or two.

I think we are few notches below mediocre right now. If we had a new coach we would still be hurting but at least the future would hold the possibility of being a good team. We are going to have to improve to just become mediocre. This was one of the worst seasons in school history (at least in the last 20 years or so). The sky isn't falling. It already fell. At least a new coach would create some hope.

a proven coach who is taking jobs like alabama and auburn is very rare. the hot mid major coach is a roll of the dice.

Grant is the basketball example of hiring Kirby Smart and expecting him to be Nick Saban.

Yeah, except Grant had been a head coach for three years, was the conference regular season champion all three years and conference tournament champion two out of three years.

While his record at VCU was ok, being the one who "recruited Florida's back to back national champions" got threw around a lot when he was hired.
