On Saturday, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer announced the hiring of Matthew Smiley as the Gamecocks Special Teams Coordinator.

Smiley, 47, comes to Columbia after spending the 2025 season as a special teams analyst at Penn State. Overall, he has 21 years of coaching experience, logging stints at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Smiley worked for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League for eight years from 2017-24. He served on Sean McDermott’s staff as the Bills’ assistant special teams coach for five seasons (2017-21), then spent three years (2022-24) as Buffalo’s special teams coordinator.
Prior to his stay in Buffalo, Smiley spent four years (2013-16) as an assistant special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
