Thanks for taking the time to write that up, truly appreciate it.

Where I was confused is that the food he currently eats isn't grain free. It's the American Journey Salmon, Brown Rice, and Vegetables mix. It doesn't have the corn or soy products in there but it does have peas. Also has taurine supplement added. Would you be concerned about this ingredient list?

quote:

Deboned Salmon, Whitefish Meal, Brown Rice, Peas, Rice Bran, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Flaxseed, Dried Tomato Pomace, Suncured Alfalfa Meal, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Salt, Oatmeal, Dried Egg Product, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), L-Threonine, Taurine, Blueberries, Cranberries, Dried Kelp, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Iodate), Choline Chloride, Dried Chicory Root, Mixed Tocopherols (Preservative), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Rosemary Extract.

I guess that's where I was confused on her recommendation. I could see switching foods if I was feeding him grain free, but I'm not.

Was not familiar with that dog food and had to look it up.
My only (minor) concern, as you said, would be the peas. The one ingredient that has been mostly associated with the DCM issue.
However, I agree with you that I would not technically consider that food “grain free” because it has brown rice/rice bran, and they supplement Taurine. So, your dog may be a case of DCM not related to diet.
Ingredients in the food actually look pretty decent.
