I never had any haunted experiences in my 17 years around Athens. But just about everyone I know, does. Pretty much every sq ft of Boulevard and Cobbham seem to be hainted.

What are yall's stories? Second-hand stories welcome too.

To kick it off, here's some that have been collected over the years-

I actually do have a ghost story but I found a plausible explanation years later so I don't tell it anymore. I guess I will now, again.

I lived in a small 1940's house on Winterville Rd. Home office in an old bedroom. I was working from home that day, which wasn't as typical back then, and I was completely alone, not even the beagles were home that day. I ran up to the Bojangles drive thru for breakfast and came home, went inside and sat down at the desk. After sitting down for about a half hour, I hear a very loud, protracted, whoopie cushion like fart come from the closet 7 ft away from me.

Instantly it raced through my mind that a burglar had snuck in when I went to Bojangles and he thought I was going to work, and I surprised him when I came home, and he's been holed up there since I got home. This took about 1 second to process.

I leaped up and into my bedroom for the single shot .410, loaded it, and staked it out. From the bedroom door there was a clear line of sight to the aforementioned closet. My heart was pounding.

And I had left my cell in my wife's car, and we didn't have a land line.

To be continued..

..Continued...

My adrenaline slowly started to wear off. I had many questions. Is this just a freaked out teenager pissing his pants? Is this an armed person? I only have one shot. I haven't heard a peep since the fart. No sneeze, no weeping, no gun cocking, no rustling, not even a creak of shifting weight, am I crazy? I know what I heard. I was too afraid to open the closet door.

I came up with a plan. I'll make like Im leaving the house, then when dude thinks the coast is clear, he'll come out. So that's what I did. Walked to the front door, opened it, closed it behind me, then watched the closet through the window. After a while, nothing. WTF.

I started convincing myself that I was crazy. I am the one who definitely has a gun. I am going to confront this now. I go back in, and I guess from watching enough cop shows I figured myself some kind of negotiator. I began speaking in authoritative voice, come out nice and slow, everything will be fine, I won't hurt you, etc.

Nothing.

My adrenaline was basically all gone now, and it was distilled down to simple paranoia that there was either the Ice Man in my closet or Im certifiably insane, both uneasy options.

I mustered enough courage to just go open the damn door, and thats what I did.

Nothing was there.

What a relief. I simply have a ghost in my house. Never told my wife the story until I found a plausible explanation.

At this point in the story, it's like a magic trick where I have to ask the audience if they really want to know the answer or if they'd rather just leave the story be and enjoy it as a CSB.

Ok.

SPOILER ALERT

I was telling this story to an old friend around a drunken campfire one night. He used to keep snakes. He said that large snakes will fart just like a human. His used to occasionally fart and it was loud and human like.

So even though there was no snake in the closet that day, the crawl space was underneath and there's no insulation and original pine floors. A snake could have farted under the floor and, acoustically speaking, it would have sounded like it was in the closet.

I had seen a large king snake around the house, and we had captured a juvi garter snake from that very same room at one time.

So we know there are snakes in and around the house, and we know that snakes can fart like humans, then I can't say my experience was supernatural.

Farting snakes? Jesus Christ. I'd rather to be haunted.

Effie haunted the hell out of her old place on 441 on the way north out of town.

We called it the compound, had sheet metal fencing and a guard tower complete with drains in every bedroom.

Some modern art master piece is sitting on that lot now.

This was her second home having had her first house mysteriously burn down where a government physical plant would later pop up on the site. I think it was the Water Treatment plant.

Up on a hill north of downtown on 441, still walkable to downtown though which was nice. Pulled in and there was a guard house structure to let you in the heavily fenced compound.

Large parlor/living room to get to know the ladies and rooms with tile like you would see in a hs shower halfway up the walls and a drain in the floor. Spray the rooms down I guess.

Had a small kitchen but the ruins of an old BBQ pit to keep the clients happy before or after their visit.

Spent time there in the mid ninties long after Effie had past, we through a bunch of parties there and had a local rock band as roommates. It was in bad shape then as a cinder block structure but perfect for Athens life before everyone lived in country clubs.

Most lively night was a bon fire with all the stuff we cleaned out of a buddies car console, apparently had a few rounds of 9mm in it. New meaning of hit the ditch when they went off
