This.
Until they decide to up the ante, it is what it is.
If you watch ESPN and don't follow the sport of recruiting, there is no way to know the real story.
However, those viewers likely DGAF.
Hardcore CFB/recruitng fans just get annoyed with ESPN... every year

It's silly to get mad and browbeat a recruiting service. It's all subjective. I say every year that the most reputable recruiting service IMO is the one that has Ole Miss ranked the highest

Business decision. They can half arse evaluate half the kids and not spend much, and casual recruiting followers will take their word for it because they are the mother ship.

Because they don't have to be the best.
They have their own network to publish their own bs rankings and push whatever entertainment or story they want.
If they didn't have this sports factory they would be forced to do better.

They don't have to be good, they just need something to reference during football games.

They don't have to put any time or money into anything but 4-8 programs. They make all of their money from Bama, ND, USC, Michigan, OSU, Nebraska, OU, and Texas and enough extra from the average ESPN frequent who clicks on the recruiting page every once in a while. Outside of initial evaluations of the top 100 or so in each class and kids being recruited by those programs, ESPN pretty much sucks as a football recruiting source.

The reason ESPN is so horrible is because the people who they have hired are sloppy reporters (to call them inept, is really understating it).
They consistently will give a prediction on a person that is so completely incorrect, you almost wonder if they are just trying to frick it up. For instance, recently I read where a kid narrowed his choices down to 3 schools. ESPN comes out with their predictions the next day and says the kid is likely going to a school that didn't even make his top 3. They do that all the time. I'd have to assume that if they are that sloppy with simple issues such as favorites, they are equally sloppy at ranking recruits. They're lazy, sloppy and don't put in any type of effort to get things right.

Because they don't need to appeal to the hardcore college recruiting customer. They just need to drive in enough traffic to make it profitable and casual fans can do that for them. The casual fan that looks on their website probably thinks they are the top dog for recruiting. Probably have never heard of scout, rivals, 247 etc...

I think they had Bama's 2008 class ranked 6th overall, vs. #1 overall by the other services.

just for discussion sake, how much money is there in the recruiting business and why would a mega corporation (disney) give a shite about dominating a small crumb of a market.

you sound like state fans. one day they like 247 and the next rivals moves up one spot and they go buy a rivals subscription
All state fans are pro 247.
Sidenote: You include something about State in 90% of your posts. You go to a mother fricking junior college, not ole miss. You are a joke.

I always thought that when ESPN started getting int recruiting they would gradually improve in perhaps become one of the more looked to names in recruiting
But honestly they are the worst, even more recent start ups have surpassed them in half the time
Perhaps ESPN is spread too thin, not sure...but this is definitely not their wheelhouse

ESPN is the teenage girl of recruiting. Always trying to make drama out of every situation and disregarding/downplaying the cold hard facts

Perhaps you aren't aware of this, but they did. ESPN hired the bulk of the scouting/eval staff away form Rivals when they made their big move and launched the whole RecruitingNation thing.
When Yahoo bought Rivals many of Rivals top scouts left Rivals or wasn't retained (Yahoo spent like 100 million to buy it).
I thought alot of them went to 247 due to their previous working relationship with the 247's CEO.
