As of now, every single SEC West school has a recruiting class ranked in the Top 20. That's ridiculous. Add in the East, and the SEC comprises 10 of the top 20, with USC sitting just outside at 21. And you just know the SEC sitting with the top 4 classes sits well elsewhere in the country. The SEC has more classes ranked in the top 5 than any other conference has in the top 20.

1) Bama
2) A&M
3) UGA
4) LSU
11) AU
15) Tennessee
16) Arkansas
18) Ole Miss
19) Florida
20) State

For reference, here are the other P5 Conference numbers in the top 20:
Big 10: 3
Big 12: 2
ACC: 2
Pac 12: 2

There is no doubt that recruiting does matter.

but, in all honesty, some teams have done well with lower ranked classes. Auburn has won a Title while rarely getting a top 5 class, if ever. Clemson is getting good classes now, but usually have good teams without high classes, then there is Oregon, Stanford, etc.

All that said, I would rather have a top 3-5 class than not. It makes things easier.

Both Florida and Tennessee should creep close to top 10 by signing day. AU likely drops to around 15-20, Arky and Ole Miss will certainly fall a bit as well.

While this is nice, I too would rather have consistently to 3-5 recruiting rankings.

Out of curiosity, I looked out AU recruiting rankings (per 247) 3 years before our championship 2010 season:

> 2007 - 9th
> 2008 - 21st
> 2009 - 23rd

Three years before 2013 championship appearance:

> 2010 - 6th
> 2011 - 5th
> 2012 - 11th

SC is finishing strong ... We'll move into the Top 20 easily.

What's not showing on that Auburn breakdown you did pre-2010 is Cam.

Cam was the difference maker.

One of a kind player.

Three decent classes and add a special player and that makes all the difference in the world.

If you can get the most dominating player in 10 years at the most important position, QB, you stand a good chance of winning the NC. Add to that if that player is playing behind an experienced senior OL, that is a good combination. AU had all that, that year.
