But schools should wait until a player officially enters the portal to talk to them , not before, even though back channels. I don’t know how to regulate it , but it needs to be.

Some random yahoo on Twitter?

Can you link an actual RULE? I certainly cannot find one consistent with this claim that a player for a fired coach can instantly enter the portal before the end of the season. I don't think it exists.

I DID find an article by a guy with 25 years of experience working in NCAA Compliance. HE says:
quote:

This prompts me to remind readers that while a coaching change CAN potentially impact an athlete’s scholarship, a coaching change does NOT change the transfer rules.

An athlete must still follow the same steps to transfer and their eligibility will depend upon the same rules and academic requirements regardless of whether their team has had a coaching change.

Saw an interview with Bama’s Terrion Arnold where he said said Stewart was the biggest trash talker he ever went up against.

Following Fisher's dismissal, Texas A&M players will have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal. Freshman wide receiver Raymond Cottrell, who has one reception this season, announced on X that he would put his name into the portal.

You still have not cited an NCAA rule, slick. I do not rely upon the unsubstantiated statements of some random yahoo.

Even if that statement is accurate, it just says that they get an extra 30 days in the portal. It does not say that those 30 days are in the middle of the season.

hahahaha that espn article a random yahoo? lololol

how about this?
Players have 30 days to enter the transfer portal after a coach's firing Players who enter transfer portal without playing more than four games this season can redshirt

Head Coach Departure Prior to Initial Full-Time Enrollment Exception" — football players can transfer if the following conditions are met:
quote:

Per Rule 14.5.5.2.11 — (B) The head coach at the student's previous institution left the institution after the student met a condition affecting transfer status

but ignorance is blissful, eh?

Yes. In my experience, reporters very seldom are accurate when attempting matters of statutory or regulatory interpretation. If political reporters are almost always wrong about statutes (and they are), I suspect that sports reporters are probably also usually wrong about NCAA regulations.
quote:

Rule 14.5.5.2.11
Try again, my friend. That rule (14.5.5.2.11) applies ONLY when the coach leaves BEFORE the student enrolls for classes. In other words, a kid is recruited by a coach, but the coach leaves before the kid ever arrives on campus. But kudos. That was a VERY nice selective edit of the rule to make it SEEM to say something other than what it actually SAYS:
quote:

14.5.5.2.11 Head Coach Departure Prior to Initial Full-Time Enrollment Exception. The student transfers to the certifying institution from another four-year institution and the following conditions are met: (Adopted: 5/1/19 effective 8/1/19)

(a) The student has not previously enrolled as a full-time student in a regular term (semester or quarter) of a collegiate institution (see Bylaw 12.8.1.1); and

(b) The head coach at the student's previous institution left the institution after the student met a condition affecting transfer status (see Bylaw 14.5.2) and before the start of the next regular academic term (e.g., fall semester).
Please pay attention. NO ONE is saying that a kid cannot transfer if his coach leaves the school. The QUESTION is whether he can enter the "portal" mid-season when that happens, rather than waiting to the post-season "window" like everyone else.

AGAIN, the Rules MAY allow this. I do not say otherwise. But I cannot FIND a rule that says otherwise ... only a few (probably ignorant) reporters who do not bother to actually cite a rule.

So I ask again, please cite the RELEVANT rule.
quote:

ignorance is blissful, eh?
I will accept your experienced opinion on that point.
