It a combination of things.
1. He doesn’t practice the passing game enough and when he does it’s practiced sloppily. The old saying “practice makes perfect” is really a bunch of crap. Perfect practice makes perfect and coaches who have dynamic passing games insist that everything, everything be exact including QB fakes, footwork, proper drops, proper checks to the right routs based on what the defense gives you, proper route running and it must be done hundreds of times. If it’s a 15 and out that doesn’t mean 14 ½ or 15 1/2, it means 15 and out, and on and on.
A dynamic passing game requires timing and precision and it takes a lot more practice time to perfect than does the running game but it has to be done properly until it becomes second nature and habit without thinking. It’s sort of like a baseball swing. If a player is allowed to take bad practice swings then it soon becomes a habit and hard to correct. When I was coaching youth baseball I use to tell my kids that for every bad swing you take it takes 10 proper ones to make up for it.
2. Nutt’s passing game is simple and sophomoric. His pass routs are “safe” routs and if the defense stops them then there is very little to fall back on. I haven’t watched Ole Miss this year but I bet there have been very few slants and crossing patterns over the middle. Too much risk.
3. The biggest problem Nutt has is that he gets into the QB’s head not to make a mistake. Taking care of the football should be emphasized but the way he does it absolutely destroys a QB’s confidence. I know this to be a fact because I know some ex Razorback players and an ex – Assistant Coach. Nutt says things like; Don’t throw and interception, Don’t turn the ball over, Don’t put us in a bad situation, Don’t throw into coverage, Don’t throw it up for grabs, Don’t do this, Don’t do that instead of saying things like deliver the ball with confidence, hit the open receiver, etc.
It’s like telling a pitcher Don’t throw the ball in the dirt. What is the last thing the pitcher is thinking? Ball in the dirt. Try this on someone sometime. Tell them Don’t think about your shoes. Don’t think about your shoes (or you can use anything). They can’t help but think about their shoes because that's the way the brain works.
The bottom line is that Nutt doesn’t believe in having a dynamic passing game (too risky) and will not do the things necessary to develop one. Just my humble opinion.

Most of Sneads development last year can be attributed to Austin. No offense to the Nutt huggers but its a fact. Austin did wonders last year hopefully he can bring Snead back around.
You are correct.
Most hog fans have realized all along that if Hootie didn't delegate the play calling and QB development to someone else, the Rebels would be in trouble. If he would have done this at Arkansas and not been so absolutely incorrigible, he most likely would have been quite successful, especially with the talent we had at times. I thought when he hired Malzahn, things would improve...but Noooooooo! I firmly believe he's too set in his ways and will not "let go of that rope." I can feel your pain!

Which is weird considering he was a QB.
Nutt was a highly rated QB in HS but he actually sucked. Much of his success was throwing jump balls to 6'5" receiver Rebert Ferrell. So, throwing passes up for grabs really didn'tt do anything to help him understand what it takes to develop a good passing game.
Ferrell went on to become an All SWC receiver while Nutt transferred to OSU and never got off the pine.

In another year or so, I predict Arkansas fans and Ole Miss fans will be like good buddies who dated the same insufferable bitch.
