A TOPS scholarship is a Louisiana only program that rewards students for academic success with partial college tuition payments. You can only recieve TOPS benefits if you attend a college that is located in Louisiana. To be eligible, a student must complete a minimum of 24 carnigere units. Of the 24 units of must have 4 maths, 4 English, 4 Science, 4 Social Studies, 1.5 units of physical education, 1 art, and 3 electives. Also, to obtain a TOPS scholarship, you must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.

From a high school student working towards a TOPS scholarship now.

I remember hearing some weird stuff from the Texas boards on the recruiting of Maea Tuehema. They said that LSU staff promised a relative from LA a scholarship (non-athletic). It didn't make sense at the time, but now it does.

This is an amazing way to hold onto talented kids from the state. You can tell them that a relative will have a place at the school and most of the cost will be covered...brilliant.

The state of Florida has the same program... called Bright Futures.

All an attempt to keep talented students in the state.
