There's no accounting for taste in anything.
It really depends on what you like.
IMO, if a college town is too small it can feel insular to a degree that is stifling.
If its too large, it doesn't really feel like a college town.
I prefer a college town to be around 50-100k people. Enough townies to keep it interesting and provide for entertainment options, but enough college to make that the overriding vibe of the city.
I think Athens and Fayetteville are about right for that. Tuscaloosa, too.
Oxford is nice and scenic, but I'd imagine it can be a bit stifling at times, especially for a non-Greek. Same with Auburn.
Austin is too big and is really a city. A relatively nice city, but a city nonetheless. Same goes for BR, without the "relatively nice" part.
But that is just my opinion. I have no empirical evidence to prove that I am right.

Fayetteville
Been there a few times and I like Fayetteville over oxford. Its a shame we have to play in Little Rock, bc Fayetteville would be a road trip I wouldn't miss. that said that is why many lsu fans won't rank it as high. Love the area around campus. I like how they didn't commercialize Fayetteville especially around campus. Its certainly more laid back than Oxford and other towns in the SEC. Somewhat reminds me a smaller version of Athens, but athens still takes the cake. ranks in my Top 3 in The SEC
Sheek's Official Top 5
1. Athens.
2. Fayetteville
3. Ttown
4. BR
5. Oxford
Lexington, Knoxville, and Auburn would follow.
Its hard to rank Nashville. Of course it would be my favorite town by Vandy sucks.

It's hard to really compare all of them anyway. Everyone has different preferences.
Nashville, Lexington, Knoxville, and Baton Rouge aren't "college towns". They're cities that just happen to have major colleges. It's really hard to compare them with actual college towns.
