I tried to google this but had no luck. Running backs are eligible receivers. On a play action pass if the defense tackles the running back after he is past the line of scrimmage, is it PI? I assume not since he faked having the ball. But what if he runs 15 yards on a route. Can he still be tackled? When does he stop being a running back and start being a receiver?

I think it has to do with if the ball is thrown to him or not. I’m most play actions, any LB worth their salt will meet him at the LOS, especially since no lineman will be blocking for him.

Pass interference is intentional contact beyond the neutral zone that prevents an opponent from moving toward or catching a legal forward pass.

The defender may not focus attention on the receiver and ignore the ball.

So yes, in your scenario, once he's past the line of scrimmage, his ability to catch a pass cannot be impeded if he is an eligible receiver.

The exceptions would be if the ball is first batted or ruled uncatchable.

Behind the line, all bets are off.

Once the RB clears the line without the ball he is like any other receiver. You can impede the route of any receiver at the line of scrimmage whether he is a RB, TE or WR. But you cannot impede once he is 3 yds clear of the line of scrimmage.

You cannot tackle a TE or a WR at the line, that would be called by most refs as a holding call. You can tackle the RB at or behine the line if there is a reasonable assumption he might be carrying the ball.

Most pass penalties called when the RB is the reciever is a holding call. Typically the cover guy is isolated and realized too late that he missed the play and usually just grabs or tackles them.

Even if a defender "tackles" a running back behind the line of scrimmage who's going out for a pass, it's still technically a penalty and the referee can call defensive holding if he fells like being a dick.

All I know is, I’m sick of the offense, particularly the QB getting bailed out with PI calls due to terrible, under thrown passes. Not every pass is a “back shoulder” throw. You will see a DB in perfect step for step coverage and then the WR crashes into him to go for a wounded duck throw.
