Not Brooklyn, that's for damn sure. And before you go off on your "I'm a badass because I live in the big city" and "I bet you've never even been to NYC" rant, I'm up there at least once every other month. My sister and gf both live up there. Being from Brooklyn, NY is nothing to be proud of, it is a cesspool.

The only thing worse than Brooklyn is NJ.
It's the armpit of America.

Comparing anything to the Northeast monetarily is stupid. Apples and oranges with the South. Of course salaries are higher and tuition is higher and people have more money. It also costs 10$ for a pack of cigarettes and 20$ to see a movie. It's a different world. If a wealthy person from the South moved to the Northeast they would be very average, but usually if that move does occur it is because of job opportunities that pay a ton more so they could continue their wealthy lifestyle. I have several relatives that have taken jobs in NY and Boston that are equal in job title but carry exponentially larger paychecks. This is why wealthy people in the North save up their money and move south to retire because it is fiscally responsible.
ETA: oh yeah, and frick BROOKLYN.

I wasn't flaming you. My sister lived in Brooklyn for a brief period and every time I went to visit her, I would hear gunshots outside her apartment. Reminded me of the 9th Ward on New Years. Place has some up and coming areas, but its a rough place overall. I made her move for her own safety

anyone care to take a guess why the cost of living in NYC is so damn high? it's this crazy concept that most of you southerners aren't used to, it's called highly desirable LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Yes this includes Brooklyn, and to say Brooklyn has nothing or is the pits is utterly fricking ignorant in stupid there is a hell of alot more there than BUMfrick MISSISSIPPI. NJ is NOT I repeat NOT the armpit of America, MS. comes out swinging and kicks NJ right in the pussy for that title. Ms. is the most god awful shite state ever to come into existence, shite I'd cut our losses and sell that shitpool to Mexico and induct Puerto Rico as our 50th state if I had the choice.
But enough of this pissing contest I go to school down here at LSU, so I shouldn't be talking shite about it. There's many things I love about it, and many I don't. But I'll bow out gracefully from this "Affluence and Regions pissing contest" PEACE

No I belive you, it's all good there are some very rough parts of Brooklyn, but there are also some very nice parts. And while you N.O. homers might not believe Brooklyn as a whole is much nicer and safer then NOLA as a whole. But yes there are definitely some VERY rough neighborhoods (i.e. East New York, Brownsville, Bed-Stuy) in Brooklyn, do you know what nabe you sis lived in?

Sounds like someone is getting real damn defensive.
You know another reason why cost of living goes up in certain areas?
OVER POPULATION.

There is almost zero difference between Louisiana and Mississippi in terms of people, education, or cost of living.

People don't desire to live there because it is so awesome. They desire to live there because it is the center of the business world, wall street, fashion, etc. and they have to earn money so they have to put up with it. It is a demand forcefully caused by economics.
ETA: It is important to note I am not defending MS. Although I do think Oxford is a cool little town with a lot of culture that people don't realize is here.

I concur. NJ gets a bad rap because of the shore and newark, but it has some extremely nice parts. Mississippi's biggest city is Jackson, nuff said.

Don't remember off hand. She was enrolled at Pratt, so it was within walking distance of the campus.

Have you ever been to Elizabeth or Trenton?
They suck arse.
It was a joke. NJ as a whole is a very beautiful state.
But not Brooklyn. It sucks.

The shore even has some nice parts, and suburbs like hoboken and parts of jersey city are very charming. And trust there is as one person put it "A TON OF frickING MONEY" in the North Jersey (NYC/Tri-state area) Burbs. And also yes people do primarily flock to NYC because it is the core of our nations economic activity. But don't even delude yourself you all know you've met at least one if not several people who wanna move to NY to find a job because they're fascinated with it's glamour, image and the excitement it offers. New York invented the American Dream shite. But again sorry for the flame-esque posts earlier. Except: to ole miss fans I hate you, your your god-awful state, it's university and the footballs squad it fields with a fiery passion. NUFF SAID

Damn.
Just for sake of accuracy, there was a thread on this weeks ago.
It showed that all SEC schools students come from families on average making over $100k per year----except Ole Miss and MSU.
Those were the two exceptions, and their families made $80-$100k per year on average. There was no breakdown over $100k.
Say what you want about the Delta, poor people, who counts and who doesn't count, etc.
But in all seriousness, MS, LA, AL and AR people splitting hairs over who has more money is kinda silly.

ole miss fans are rednecks that like to pretend they have money....when in reality, most of them dont. They spend lots of money on clothes and cars and return home to a trailer park or a 1000 sq ft house in the middle of the boondocks.

And for the record, by that breakdown, I was below average as far as family income when I attended the University of Arkansas.

LA- port of south la and n.o., controls the ms river
AR- Wal Mart, Tyson Chicken, etc
AL- Port of Mobile, Regions, ThyssenKrupp
MS- Tunica?
I think there is some validity in saying mississippi sucks
