There was a large meeting in Texas one year. One of the top recruits in the nation was at the hotel. Johnny was too drunk to even speak with him.
Near the end at Tennessee. The players hated Johnny. He was a bitter old drunk. Heath Shuler absolutely detested him.
Johnny was also a jealous SOB. The '85 Sugar Vols may have been his best team (yes, better than 89). This was not because of Johnny. It was because of DC Ken Donahue.
So, what does Johnny do? Ran off Donahue when the praise got a little too much, and took the credit away from Johnny.
