The Vanderbilt beat writer at the time,Larry Woody with the Nashville Tennessean wrote an outstanding book on this topic.
As for Gaines, he came from quite a talented, celebrated family in metro Nashville (Dupont HS in Old Hickory). His oldest brother, Greg, played CB for Tennessee from 1977-1980 and then LB for the Seahawks. His middle brother Chris played LB at Vandy from '84-'87 and set a then SEC record for tackles vs Tulane in 1987 with 34.Brad was considered the most talented of the three.

That quote Larry Woody made about Billy Brewer and Chucky last night choked me up - can't remember exactly...He said Brewer was a poor kid and said "I'm gonna make it or die trying - Chucky died trying."

It was an excellent documentary. I watched it with my high school aged daughter. I had to fight back the urge to sob like a baby.
