I don't know if it's an elite program, but the head coaching position there is elite (if that makes sense).
There's no reason UGA couldn't, and really shouldn't win big fairly consistently. It's certainly a top tier job.

I agree with this. UGA is in the 4th best recruiting base in the nation and considering it's the only major university in the state of Georgia it might well be in the best recruiting situation in the nation. The football program is one of the most financially successful in college football and it's a fairly low pressure job compared with top SEC programs. In other words Richt is in a pretty cushy situation.

I agree that the state has a great recruiting base, but it is also surrounded by other states with excellent football programs...making it difficult to keep them all at home.

Maybe the problem?

Historically yes. The top seven winningest programs currently in the SEC are all amongst the top 23 winningest FBS teams of all time; Alabama being the highest ranked at 8th,(this because football caught on in the north long before the south)while Florida is 23rd. UGA is currently 11th all-time. BTW, aTm is 18th all-time so as of next season, the SEC will have 8 of the 23 winningest FBS programs of all-time; not too shabby. Anyway, as for as currently elite teams, 5-10 years IMO, UGA would not make the cut but like UF in the 90's, LSU and 'Bama in the past decade, programs of that stature can go from good to great virtually overnight.
