I'll say this, he had horrible luck with injuries.

Maybe the worst in memory.

Agreed. His tenure actually reminds me of how Muschamp went down at UF. He had a season of injuries that murdered UF and followed it up with a mediocre season. The fatal error for Jones was not hanging on to Debo. Larry Scott is simply horrible as an OC.

But what I truly want to know about Jones' tenure is whether or not he truly controlled who played. I can't understand why Bob Shoop suddenly turned into Sal Sunseri.

Also, Josh Dobbs may well be one of the best players the SEC has ever had. It truly could've been all him.

Yeah that is odd, but we as fans always want someone that wants to be at our University, as opposed to just a hired gun.

I always thought Jones actually wanted to be at Tennessee and loved it in Knoxville, just didn't work out.

I agree with that. Jones tried but the job was ultimately too big for him. He's a 9 win coach at his best with lesser seasons in between and that's just not acceptable.

Yeah, Dobbs is a top flight guy and turned into a damn good QB, he won many games with his legs and arm.

He truly was amazing to watch. And in hindsight very likely carried Jones' entire tenure.

As for the present... designing the offense around Dormady was a terrible mistake. JG should've been playing from the start. Yes, he was unprepared and made a mediocre appearance but he was actually growing as a QB every game until he got injured. QD never showed any sign of getting better.

Totally agree on both accounts, Jones imo, was too focused on recruiting as opposed to bringing in the best OC he could find, and it turned out awful.

He wanted to keep Dormady on the line until the new QBs came in to solve the depth problem at QB. He played QD to keep him - not because he was the best and I think that caused a lot of issues in the locker room. I'm suspicious of whether or not he controlled the defense as well. We have had defensive players that fans have wanted as starters taking first team reps this week. I want to see the players Hoke starts.

FTR, Hoke has also completely changed how practice works.

It really would have been interesting to of seen what Kiffin could have accomplished at Tennessee if he would not have bolted for USC. I would not be surprised if a trip or two to Atlanta would have been made? Kiffin sure as hell had the Vols ready to play in the 2009 TSIO.

And the misuse of Kamara last year and Chandler this year was baffling. Both fit the system much better than did Hurd and Kelly.

Both great players, but not for the system he runs.

His system calls for RB's that can run and catch.

Remember Dooley loss to LSU in a crazy final. From a coaching perspective the guy could be better than most give him credit for.

Wait, what? He out Les'ed Les in terms of late game clusterfricks

Three 3 star
two 2 star

Throw in a couple of 2 star ADs also.

University of Tennessee did not develop the coaches to their full potential.

I think he simply didn't know how to manage higher talent and the egos that come with that. He juggled them just enough to keep them happy but without regard to his own offense and what it needed. Baffling is a great description of it. Why let Scott keep running vanilla plays when the plays from the year prior were perfect for the talent you have? Why keep running Hurd into a brick wall when you can sweep or throw a short pass and get hella yardage out of Kamara?

He got so caught up in the players that he couldn't run his own damn offense. I don't know if it came from favoritism, fear of losing the players, or simply not knowing how to manage his own damn players.

He had the offensive system and the players to go with it yet didn't play the ones that fit it.

I would love to have Patterson, Frost, or Gruden (I don't know what the hell is going on there but grumoring is fun as hell). I'm not quite sold on Mullen taking a jump like Franklin did but I'm not opposed to him either. Tennessee needs a name coach right now. We need a "Johnny come home from Pitt again" type of hire.

Even if a name-type hire fails at the job, we need the admin to show it's committed to excellence rather than mediocrity.
