Hilarious when people think redneck = Southern.
There are rednecks ALL over the entire US.

THIS.

Redneck is a way of life, not an ethnic group. People decide, in one way or another, to be trashy.

This was my point earlier. That kind of trashy acts the same everywhere. Maybe with different clothes and hair and accents. And country people are different than rednecks.

100% true. Redneck =/ Southern.
And Bella - it's entirely possible! One side of my Mom's family came to Arkansas from somewhere in either Calhoun or Lowndes counties in Alabama. There are references to both places. The family names were Johnston and Griffith, FWIW. (These are not my family name.)

Exactly. Like I said before, a person makes the decision, it could be conscious or unconscious, to live their life as trash.

You and Bella are 100% correct - country =/ redneck. I've vacationed all over, and I can tell you that New England absolutely has its share of rednecks. Larry the Cable Guy's cousins are all over the place!

My dad's family is from Virginia and then they eventually moved onward to Tuscaloosa. My mom's family had the plantation literally right next to my dad's family in Virginia in the 1700's. Her family isn't from Alabama.
My best friend's family is from Calhoun County and her grandmother is a Johnston. I bet you're her cousin.

In my limited experience in dealing with rednecks, the thing I find most unbelievable about them is that they really don't think they are trash. They honestly believe that they are better than other people / entire ethnic groups.

I wonder how many people on here are rednecks...

I could probably compile you a pretty large list, based on posting history and ignorant comments alone. There are quite a few, IMO.

Yet more evidence we could be cousins!! My mom's family settled in Virginia, and were there before 1630. They had a lot of property, and at one point some brothers (younger sons who weren't going to inherit the plantation) bought a lot of land in South Carolina and resettled there. Then it went from SC to AL to Arkansas. They were farmers, educators and ministers.
My dad's family is more of an enigma because of a change to the family name somehow connected to illegal whiskey and horse thieves. Apparently part of the family changed their name to my last name so the connection wouldn't be known. I dead ended in 1800 around Nashville for them. They sound like an interesting bunch though!

ETA: Yes, I'd say the redneck percentage here is fairly high!

Without a doubt.
We should start a spreadsheet.
We should start a spreadsheet.

I'll help! I spent several years in marketing for financial companies - they speak spreadsheet, so I became somewhat proficient!

ETA: that might make an interesting IM thread....redneck experiences.

We can do this.
How can we go about naming the redneck trash without getting banned?

I'm sure they at least knew each other.
I can't imagine there were that many circles of friends in 1600's Colonial Virginia. We'll have to compare notes off the board.

Seems to be pretty common here in FL to equate the two. I can see where they get it from, though. The only Southern people in FL are the rednecks, but they fail to realize that correlation does not equal causation. So you have guys jacking up their trucks and slapping Salt Life stickers all over them thinking you can buy "Southern". You really don't get the other "types" of Southern here like you do in most places.
