The answer to that question lies in part in the list of players in the quote. Notice that you listed one defensive stand-out and the rest are offensive players. In other words IMHO the reason is that our recruiting on defense has not been on par with our offensive recruiting.

Van Gorder got the most out of our defense in Richt's early years at the helm at UGA. Prior to Coach Richt, we didn't have a capable coach which I attribute to poor hiring by our AD. After Van Gorder left, it is now clear that Martinez was not a capable DC and we were unable to recruit enough quality defensive players.

I guess this should not be surprising considering Mark Richt came to us as and OC from FSU; obviously his focus has been on the offense. Hopefully with Grantham taking over the defense we have someone who is both capable as a DC and will be able to recruit players who fit well into his 3-4 defense.
