"Meaningless" apparently is a moving target.
If football nerds choose to view everything that happens during hte season through the lens of how it effects the national championship and constantly looking ahead to the national championship, that's fine.
But then you miss the journey. Winning the national championship isn't the end-all-be-all. It's obviously great, but if you can't enjoy all of the stuff in between because you're fixated on the national championship, that seems like a pretty joyless fan existance.
