In fairness, let's look at Alabama, aka a program that consistently lives up to and exceeds to high expectations.

1993 - #2 > #14
1995 - #10 > #21
2000 - #3 > Not Ranked
2009 - #5 > #1
2010 - #1 > #10
2011 - #2 > #1

Finished in the top ten 7 out of 10 times.
Only finished unranked once.
Finished higher than initial preseason top 10 ranking 4 times (all national championships)
