You had me right up until there. Going 35 MPH over the speed limit is kind of a threat.
that's a fair point, and I thought about that after I hit send

decided to leave it, because I truly don't think the kid is or ever was a "willful threat"; or rather, that he is an actual danger to the public moving forward

yes, he really screwed up and the consequences of his poor judgement are permanent and irreversible - so I definitely agree that he himself deserves to face serious consequences

however, charging him as an adult does not serve any purpose other than pure punishment

sure, I understand the argument that this "sends a message"; but I don't buy it. I do not believe that sending this kid to the state pen with hardened criminals will stop the next dumb kid from smoking a joint or driving too fast

it won't bring the Bramblett's back either. the whole situation sucks all around, but we treat minors differently for a reason - the ONLY reason this kid is looking at adult time is because of who he killed and I have problem with out two tiered justice system

youthful offender makes sense in this case

I agree with all of your post except why they're charging him as an adult. My understanding, which may be wrong, is that the law requires it in this case.

I don't want him charged as an adult.

When the slowest car is going 55 and most are going 70, is it really worth that dislike feeling? The speed limits are often outdated.

You don't think 15 mph difference is big?

If the speed limit is 55, then it's done for a reason. The speed limit is higher in other areas.

Speed limit on the interstate here in AZ is 75. But that's still people need to go like 90mph+ I'll be doing 79 and they'll pass me like nothing.

It has nothing to do with the actual posted speed limit and everything to do with people thinking the rules don't apply to them and they don't mind putting other people at risk.

Pretty sure they don't throw kids in adult prison. They are only sentenced as adults, they'll still stay in age appropriate places.

Your both right and wrong.

He would be with juveniles until his 18th birthday. On that day he would be sent to prison.

For all the people defending the teen, what if you found out the following two bits of information: (hypothetically)

1. The path he reporting taking from the lake to his home would have caused a turn onto the road he was driving and accelerating to 90 mph in less than 1.5 miles.
2. The teen in question had a chronic history of severe marijuana use and most parents and kids in the community knew of it and tried to keep their kids away from his influence?

Would that change your idea of leniency?

yes, because it changes my opinion of him as a threat to society

Glad we see it the same way. I would encourage the entire board to quit making assumptions about this situation because when the entire details are public, we will all probably agree with the outcome.

My hypothetical guess is he pleads out to keep as many details of his personal life/choices out of the media. That would be best for everybody.

(Hypothetically of course)

75 is the limit? That’s much better than it is in the southeast. Limits of 55 and 66 are for often no good reason. 80 on the interstate is not big when the average car is going 72 in a 65 zone. It’s the really slow cars that are gonna be causing the trouble in this area.
