10/19/1963 - In a composite photograph, Alabama quarterback Joe Namath throws a touchdown pass to Charles Stephens against Tennessee on Oct. 19, 1963 at Legion Field in Birmingham. The Tide won 35-0. The Vols wore their "Halloween" uniforms.
Traditions
"The checkerboard end zones were the brainstorm of former Tennessee coach and athletic director Doug Dickey. When Dickey took over as coach in 1964, he had the end zones painted with the checkerboards."

Well, looky here. The Vol AD Dickey "invented" the checkerboard endzone in 1964. Legion Field was doing it in 1961.
