On This Day In History, 1777: Articles of Confederation submitted to the states
Posted by L.A. on 11/17/25 at 9:58 am
quote:
On November 17, 1777, Congress submits the Articles of Confederation to the states for ratification.
The Articles had been signed by Congress two days earlier, after 16 months of debate. Bickering over land claims between Virginia and Maryland delayed final ratification for almost four more years. Maryland became the last state to approve the Articles on March 1, 1781, affirming them as the outline of the official government of the United States. The nation was guided by the document until the implementation of the current U.S. Constitution in 1789
The critical distinction between the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution—the primacy of the states under the Articles—is best understood by comparing the following lines.
The Articles of Confederation begin:
“To all to whom these Present shall come, we the undersigned Delegates of the States…”
By contrast, the Constitution begins:
“We the People of the United States…do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
The predominance of the states under the Articles of Confederation is made even more explicit by the claims of Article II:
“Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled.”
Less than five years after the ratification of the Articles of Confederation, enough leading Americans decided that the system was inadequate to the task of governance that they peacefully overthrew their second government in just over 20 years. The difference between a collection of sovereign states forming a confederation and a federal government created by a sovereign people lay at the heart of the debate as the new American people decided what form their government would take.
Between 1776 and 1787, Americans went from living under a sovereign king, to living in sovereign states, to becoming a sovereign people. That transformation defined the American Revolution.

DHS deports the illegal alien who'd been aided by judge to avoid ICE arrest

A Mexican migrant allegedly assisted by a Wisconsin judge in evading arrest by immigration authorities earlier this year has been deported, officials said Friday.
Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, 31, who has a lengthy criminal history, was sent back to his native country on Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security said.
"Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a previously removed illegal alien, has a laundry list of violent criminal charges including strangulation and suffocation, battery, and domestic abuse. Judge Hannah Dugan's actions to obstruct this violent criminal’s arrest take activist judge to a whole new meaning," said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

A Game of Thrones editor was killed by a lion during a safari trip in a horrific attack after the animal leaped through an open vehicle window.
Katherine Chappell, 29, was traveling through a safari park close to Johannesburg in South Africa when her dream vacation became a tragedy. She rolled down a window to photograph a lion resting on the ground.
Without warning, it rose up on its back legs, sprang forward and attacked her through the window. Eyewitness Ben Govender told the New York Post: "We saw the [guide] diving into the passenger seat and punching at the lioness.
"After the first bite, the lioness retreated from the car with blood dripping from her mouth and paw.'' The animal then staged a second devastating attack, savaging its victim. Ben added: "Her face was torn apart. The right side of her chest was gone. Nothing could have been done to save that woman."

Every Parent Knows Why Republicans Cannot Give In to the Democrat Shutdown Tantrum
Posted by L.A. on 11/9/25 at 9:46 am
quote:
Most Americans are probably more than ready for the federal government shutdown -- now the longest in U.S history -- to end.
But how it ends is very important. As any parent or anyone who has observed a two-year-old throwing a tantrum knows, if you give in to unrealistic demands now, it will be worse down the road.
That candy bar grabbed at the checkout line today will become many more in the days ahead if the child is screaming and stomping to get it. It is a power play, and parents must enforce their authority.
If the Democrats succeed in extorting out of Republicans, who are in charge, even a one-year extension of the Obamacare enhanced subsidies, which are due to expire at the end of this year by the Democrats' own legislation, the demands will be more the next time there needs to be a short-term extension of government funding.
Elections have consequences. The Democrats lost last fall, and they are trying to leverage their minority position in the Senate into $1.5 trillion in new healthcare spending and a rollback of the Medicaid reforms, such as work and citizenship requirements, that Republicans put in the "Big Beautiful Bill."

Not sure if there's anything new here, but for those who are interested, here it is
The Athletic

What do people on the outside think of the LSU situation?
It was barely a week ago that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry forced himself into LSU business once again. After head coach Brian Kelly was fired with a $53 million buyout that still may be negotiated down, athletic director Scott Woodward was also fired with a buyout of more than $6 million, on day after Landry said the school’s Board of Supervisors would hire the next coach.
“He needs to stay in his lane,” one athletic director told The Athletic, granted anonymity to speak candidly. “He’s a typical fan who has an ego, he’s going to try to engineer what they’re doing. He doesn’t know how to hire a coach and doesn’t know his actions have turned people off.”
Shortly after Kelly was fired, Landry complained about coaching agents, incorrectly saying that Kelly and Jimbo Fisher had the same agent, and that taxpayers would pay for a buyout. (They do not.) He repeated similar points on The Pat McAfee Show, saying, “Everyone is in agreement in Louisiana, the next coach we hire is going to have a patently different contract. If that agent can’t see what’s coming down the pike.”

Swastikas found painted on Brooklyn yeshiva hours after Zohran Mamdani elected NYC mayor
Posted by L.A. on 11/5/25 at 6:38 pm
The largest city in America just elected a socialist Muslim as mayor. What could possibly go wrong?
NY Post

quote:
A bike-riding vandal scrawled swastikas at a Brooklyn yeshiva early Wednesday, just hours after Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race and raised fears of a new “normalization of antisemitism.”
Security staff called cops after discovering the hateful symbols drawn in red paint on the pillars and window of the Magen David Yeshiva on McDonald Avenue around 6 a.m., police said.
Surveillance video of the crime captured the lone suspect, who wore a fedora and was dressed in black, riding up to the yeshiva on a bicycle and stopping long enough to scrawl the swastikas.
“But here you have a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, a Jewish school with a massive attendance…. It’s very traumatic.”

Backlash followed her comment, especially from LGBTQ+ fans, who expressed that Kirk posed a danger to their community.

Updated Saints draft picks for 2026 & 2027 drafts
Posted by L.A. on 11/5/25 at 10:22 am
quote:
As the deadline was minutes away, the Saints dealt Penning for a bag of peanuts. A late Day 3 pick in two years was the price to peel away Penning. That certainly seems more about the Saints attitude towards the former first round pick than it was the offer on the table. Still, it's something.

Round 5 (Saints)
Round 5 (Seahawks)
Round 6 (Saints)
The 2026 Draft will be huge for the Saints, who are clearly a rebuilding team. New Orleans needs to load up on picks so that it can stack young talent and eventually return to being a competitive team. With eight current picks in next year’s draft, the first step of that process is off to a great start.
Of course, a rebuild is usually a multi-year process, and it’s always great to add young talent, so adding draft picks in future drafts is important as well. That’s what New Orleans did by sending Penning to the offensive line-needy Chargers for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Here’s a look at how the Saints' picks are currently shaping up for that draft.

Round 3 (Saints)
Round 4 (Saints)
Round 5 (Saints)
Round 6 (Chargers)
The picks in the 2027 Draft, which will surely change by the time it’s actually time to make selections, is relatively thin right now for New Orleans. The Saints posses their first five picks, and now have a sixth rounder thanks to the Penning trade. However, New Orleans gave up its original 2027 six for wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, and their seventh for Davaughn Vele.

LSU is still #1.
The Athletic/NY Times
quote:
1. LSU
Record over the last five years: 40-21
The Athletic’s estimated valuation: $1.23 billion (10th among Power 4 programs)
Job grade: A
LSU is a top-five job in college football, maybe top-three. How can it not be when Les Miles and Ed Orgeron recently won national championships here? It has titles, tradition and unique local support. It has a hold of its talent-rich state like very few schools — one of the few remaining places where kids really do commit to the school and not the coach. LSU will always get almost all of the best kids in Louisiana because that’s the culture. After a few years of LSU falling behind in player spending, that changed this year, with an $18 million roster and the nation’s top-ranked transfer class. There’s a reason LSU was able to pull an unprecedented move of hiring a winning Notre Dame head coach four years ago.
But with all that comes the highest of bars. You have to compete for and win national championships here. Brian Kelly, a very successful coach otherwise, couldn’t do it. Was that because of Kelly’s personality, or was it because the flattening of the sport’s competitive structure has made it harder for all the top schools to win big? The school leadership and involvement of politicians also make for a bit more for a coach to navigate. Still, almost anyone could be an option here. LSU is that good of a job.

'I HOPE YOU DIE' - Dem political hopeful wishes 'pancreatic cancer' on Republican senator
Posted by L.A. on 11/4/25 at 9:57 am
quote:
Freshman Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., was targeted with death threats and other extreme insults by a left-wing city commissioner candidate from Montana's capital city of Helena, who called his office several weeks ago to leave her thoughts about the Republican senator over a voicemail.
The voicemail came in July, shortly after Sheehy voted with his Republican colleagues to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping tax and spending package from Republicans that angered many Democrats, including Helena city commissioner candidate Haley McKnight, following its passage.
"Hi, this is Haley McKnight. I'm a constituent in Helena, Montana," McKnight started off in her voicemail, a recording of which was obtained and verified by Fox News Digital. "I just wanted to let you know that you are the most insufferable kind of coward and thief. You just stripped away healthcare for 17 million Americans, and I hope you're really proud of that. I hope that one day you get pancreatic cancer, and it spreads throughout your body so fast that they can't even treat you for it."
"I hope you die in the street like a dog," McKnight continued. "One day, you're going to live to regret this. I hope that your children never forgive you. I hope that you are infertile. I hope that you manage to never get a boner ever again. You are the worst piece of s--- I have ever, ever, ever had the misfortune of looking at … God forbid that you ever meet me on the streets because I will make you regret it. F--- you.
