Pt 2
In response to a question about the #Sooners' kicking competition... I think Brent Venables just compared Zach Schmit to Spencer Rattler?
"It's a developmental game," he went on. "What I saw, I've got a lot of confidence in both those guys (Schmit and Tyler Keltner)."
——
Venables on the kicking competition: “We have a spring and a summer sample size. We know Zach has a big leg and will be our kickoff guy, and Tyler will start the season on field goals.”
——
"They're a different style of backs. Obviously you get 'em both in the game early and see who's hot." - Brent Venables on #Sooners co-starting RBs, Gavin Sawchuk and Jovantae Barnes.
——
Brent Venables on OL: You've got to earn trust and that opportunity thru body of work in spring, summer, fall camp. Hopefully you can get to a position of game control where you can get a rotating basis where you can get other guys on the field to gain experience.
——
Brent Venables said the #Sooners will still play a lot of offensive linemen early and hope to keep doing that even throughout the season to continue to develop the position. He notes cohesion is important. They'll try to get game control and then work more guys in.
——
Venables on the #Sooners' depth at LB...
"You feel like they're veterans now, going into their third year. Of course, I'm emotionally attached to that group... They've taken it seriously, led by Danny. Couldn't be more proud of his leadership, his growth, his maturation."
——
Brent Venables calls the linebackers the "heart and soul" and the "backbone" of the locker room. Also said he couldn't be more proud of Danny Stutsman's maturation and leadership.
——
Venables says Dasan McCullough is currently “day-to-day.” McCullough missed all of fall camp with an injury.
——
Venables on LBs Kip Lewis and Lewis Carter: “They have a chance to be as good as there is in CFB.”
——
Brent Venables on LBs: I'm emotionally attached to that group, challenging them from the day I got here, to be the heart and soul and the backbone of this football team in the locker room.
——
Brent Venables on LBs: We're going to play a lot of guys because we have a lot of good players there. We're really excited to about that group.
——
Brent Venables was downright giddy telling a story about the start of the development process for his linebackers over the last couple years at OU, when David Ugwoegbu, DaShaun White and Danny Stutsman showed up at his office unprompted on a Sunday afternoon to watch film.
——
Venables asked why he chose to deploy Billy Bowman and Peyton Bowen in the return game for the #Sooners.
"They're really good players," he said. "You can get hurt at any position... My responsibility is to put the best guys in position to make plays."
——
Venables on Bowen and Bowman returning kicks: “They have a knack for it… You could get hurt at any position… You put your best guys in a position to make plays…”
——
Venables with some high praise for #Sooners cheetah Kendel Dolby.
"He's one of the more competitive football players I've been around... There's been a maturation that I have a great appreciation for. He's had a great last several months."
——
#Sooners coach Brent Venables says WR Brenen Thompson has become one of the team's best leaders.
"He's done a great job. ... Shows great toughness and durability. Had the most yardage of any of our receivers during fall camp."
——
Venables on #Sooners speedster WR Brenen Thompson...
"He's become one of our best leaders. Incredibly vocal. He came in here as an inexperienced guy, a track guy... [Now] he can run the entire route tree. He was focused on not being labeled as just a 9-router or a go-ball guy."
——
Brent Venables says C Branson Hickman (SMU transfer) is one of 13 players making first #Sooners start.
"A bright guy who has put the time in ... to put himself in this position. He's not been overwhelmed by everything you might see on any given line of scrimmage in CFB.)
——
Venables on freshman QB Michael Hawkins listed as the backup: “He has shown us a lot of things… He’s got a big arm. He’s a quick decision maker. He can improvise… and he can beat you down the field with his legs.”
——
Venables on Michael Hawkins being the backup: “Tremendous playmaker… He’s got a lot to learn… Was at times outstanding and at times dreadful, like all young players… We don’t have to have a refined package for Mike… We just felt like Mike was our next best option…”
——
Brent Venables on Michael Hawkins Jr. being #Sooners QB2: "Mike has shown us a lot of things, but he's a tremendous playmaker, really focused and locked in, fundamentally sound...He's got a lot to learn. Sometimes was outstanding and sometimes was dreadful like all young players"
——
Brent Venables on having 17 freshmen on the depth chart: "I think in this day and age, that's probably appropriate." (Because the stability in the locker room isn't the same).
——
Venables on 2024 class and their being six on two-deep: “That’s a lot but we have recruited at a high level… I’m not surprised and hopeful and maybe see a few more.”
——
rent Venables on David Stone: That LOS on defense, we're hopeful to play a 9-12 range, w/12 being best-case scenario. He led the DTs, when we went pass rush drills, he led in our sacks. He's getting refined fundamentally and technically. We expect big things from him.
——
Brent Venables says there's a chance that, had Eddy Pierre-Louis enrolled in January, the true freshman might have been able to push for an "OR" spot atop the depth chart at guard.
——
Venables on David Stone: “He’s just trying to get refined… But I love where he’s at…”
Says Stone will “absolutely” play a good amount this year.
——
Brent Venables on comfort level on offense: Excited about what they can become. My vision is for them to effectively run the ball and put pressure on them with schemes... we have fantastic playmakers at our skill positions.
——
Brent Venables on #Sooners OL coach Bill Bedenbaugh's intensity...
"Most of the time, when he comes in the building, it's the No Fun Zone for Bill."
But he adds that if you gave Bedenbaugh truth serum, he'd likely admit that this year's OL has been a "fun" group to coach.
——
Brent Venables on TE room: They love to compete, they're skills, they know how to play tight end. They love to block. They know how to get open and have balls throw to them. They catch it.
——
37 minutes, 55 seconds: The first Temple question of the Brent Venables Press Conference.
——
Brent Venables on Friday Night Lights, says he most remembers playing against hated rival Salina Central while at Salina South.
——
"He's worked hard at helping everyone else get better around him and he's got broad shoulders." - Brent Venables on #Sooners QB Jackson Arnold.
