3.46 YPC: The Data and Design of Oklahoma’s 2025 Run Defense

Brent Venables has not slowed down since moving to the SEC. While many defensive coordinators in the conference have pivoted toward "reduction" fronts and heavy interior play by their D-line, to mirror the league's physical identity, Oklahoma has doubled down on movement.

In 2025, the Sooners remained one of the most aggressive units in college football, blitzing on nearly 50% of pass plays. To maintain this volume without compromising the backend, Venables leaned heavily into simulated pressures, finishing the season with a ~31% Sim Rate.

The 2025 data highlights a unit that prioritized disruption over static gap control:

Stunt Rate: 37.2% (4th Nationally).
Sack Rate: 6th Nationally.
Pressure Rate: 16th Nationally.
Run Defense: 3.46 YPC (1st Nationally) | 27.1% Success Rate (1st Nationally).

While the pass rush garners the headlines, the 2025 run defense was the structural anchor of the team. Oklahoma finished 2nd in overall EPA/play by leveraging a "gapped out" 3-4 system that utilizes "Big Nickel" personnel to create post-snap identification nightmares for offensive coordinators.

Amazing Results/Facts:

Brent Venables is a defensive savant.

When Venables became Oklahoma’s Head Coach in 2022, the Sooners finished 122nd nationally in Total Defense—the lowest ranking in school history.

The turnaround:

2022 — 122nd
2023 — 80th
2024 — 19th
2025 — 6th
A climb of 116 spots in just three seasons.
Before the 2025 season, Venables was asked why he wanted the added responsibility of serving as both Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator.
His response:

“Because I’m good at it.”

The numbers say he was right.
