Ok. So, after some thought…here goes…

That was the absolute worst game any QB has played in the BV era, IMO, Period.

You have to adjust for opponent to understand how bad it was.

This was a G5 team that OU scored 14 points on and one of the scores was on a bust that the QB literally admitted to needing to hear the crowd to know he had a man open.

The first of two picks came on the first pass play of the game on a play which he broke every cardinal rule of QBing by throwing across his body into the middle.

When they ran the RPO, he made every wrong choice.

When they were running a two minute drill he handed the ball off with no timeouts on consecutive plays. The first choice to run, that was fine but then you HAD to stop the clock on the next snap in some form or another and he simply handed it off again.

The worst game I have seen QB’d in 5 seasons of poor QB management and that includes some real doozys like Mike Hawkins vs SoCar and Arnold vs. Tennessee. At least they didn’t finish the games and the staff made the right move to try someone else.

This was bad.

And it was against New Mexico.

Thinking about it, I think our WR coach is a big part of problem. WRs can’t get open and teams know it and stack box knowing Mateer folds under pressure. He has failed for a long time and gets free passes.

Our TE’s get open and get passes.

Something to think about. Oline is being swamped and it ripple effects. They have no idea who to block, too many defenders.

100% nailed it. But even when Mateer is not pressured, he either forces a dumb pass or gets indecisive & waits too long then has to fire a mostly uncatchable laser. He's become JFA.

It blows my mind the regression from Mateer. And that staff hasn’t made a change yet.

Now if we need Newbauer it will be in SEC play under harsher conditions

Its crazy after week 1, we blew opponent away and OSU lost to Tulsa. It seemed OSU was in big trouble with hire/QB. And now after 3 games its completely flipped. OSU future looks great with their HC and OU is in big trouble heading to SEC play.

The Main Line
@TheMainLinePod

Brent Venables fooled the administration and a lot of fans.

We were all so desperate for a defense that just fixing one side of the ball was extension worthy.

Then the 12-team playoff warped perceptions. Finishing #8 has NEVER been acceptable at OU.

——

Woo doggy, the replies from fans were not kind to OU admin and staff. Here’s a few:

—-

Olivertwist
@Olivertwist009

Why are we rewarding players for walking off the field and quitting on his teammates! That’s why our offense and team are terrible! bullshite! Loser mentality starts with the Head! Coach!
Jahsiear Rogers should be removed along with @CoachEmmett @arbuckle_ben and @JimNagyOU

——

Soonerrobo
@Rojuwi

Let’s not let Roger denny off any hooks. He’s made two moves basically so far and i think both are absolutely disastrous. Keeping Moser was preposterous and extending Venables when there was no need could end up sinking this program. Should’ve gotten a sports guy not a nerd.

——

Josh Ferris
@Joca628

Somebody like Bob Stoops really needs to get him in a room and explain to him what being a head coach actually means. He has to let go of this he’s only there for the defense mentality. Kirby Smart is a defensive mind, but he still makes sure that the offense is held accountable.

——

sooner Baseball 2026 natty thrawn
@SoonerThrawn

Brent has more road wins vs top 25 sec teams in 2 seasons then Lane has in 7 seasons and he paid like he Nick Saben . Programs do this all the time sark won 13 and 10 after 2 years got more money.

——

Vibestir
@vibestirOG

It is amazing how everyone that touches his offenses get worse from the time the step on campuses. OC’s, QB’s, Ol, RB’s but it’s always someone else’s fault.

——

RJ Young
@RJ_Young

—Former Oklahoma QB Michael Hawkins tonight: 313 total yards, five TDs vs. No. 25 Virginia

—Oklahoma QB John Mateer tonight: 255 total yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs vs. New Mexico

Here’s where #Sooners Offense ranks in the SEC:

Passing - 15th (Second to Last)
Rushing - 15th (Second to Last)
Scoring - 15th (Second to Last)
Total - 16th (Last)

Arkansas has more total offense than OU.

Holy cow we are setting records back to 1937

Mike Brooks
@MBrooks02

Through Oklahoma’s first three games of 2026:

Offensive CFI: 88
Defensive CFI: 202
Overall CFI: 145

CFI average = 100. Higher is better.

These numbers will change substantially as the season progresses, but here’s what really jumps out:

The 114-point gap between Oklahoma’s Defensive CFI and Offensive CFI is the widest in my database, which goes back to 1937.

Three games is a small sample, but so far the numbers tell a remarkable story — an elite-level defense paired with an offense performing below the FBS average.

Which direction does it go from here?

I was trying to remember a time when we had literally zero viable or even playable backup QBs BEFORE BV's tenure. We got in a bind thanks to Bomar but Paul Thompson stepped the f up. I'm drawing blanks. We';ve had some really good backup QB's, Joey Halsle comes to mind. Current OC at Tenner, btw.

How do we know Newbauer isn’t viable? We let Hawkins go too. Its coaching. And since Brent is super focused on D, offense is run by children

Coaches need to soften up practices. Indiana won title with very little weekly practice. A rusty but fresh player is better than one in street clothes
