Per the show**, the guy who catfished him was secretly gay and started a Facebook profile posing as a girl in order to stay closeted and act out his fantasy.
"She" friended Te'o and he bit hard, arguably because some around him sort of confirmed she was real, and because others were afraid to tell him he was acting extremally naïve.
The gay guy finally broke it off by posing as the brother of the "girl," saying that she had died.
Hilarity ensues when Deadspin notices that there never was a real girl, and the gay guy finally comes forward.
In the doc, Te'o comes across as a lovable idiot that you actually sort of feel sorry for, and the gay guy is now a tranny. He gets way too much airtime and is made out to be a sympathetic character when in reality he's clearly a piece of shite (for dragging an entire family through this hoax) with mental problems.
It's a bit more complex than this, but that's the overview. Actually a pretty good watch if you're wanting to kill a couple of hours.
**All of this is debatable, and there's a chance Te'o was gay, he was in on it, etc. That catfisher is probably an extremely unreliable narrator, too, but this is how it was all portrayed.

I realized I never answered your question — no, he never saw her or met her. All he had were her pictures, which were actually from a real (unrelated) girl.
There's a freaky moment with one particular picture of this real girl right before it all comes crashing down that I won't spoil.

Again, Te'o was not the brightest bulb. IMO he wasn't in on it, he's just really a Tebow-like guy who is easily taken advantage of, for several reasons.

I was a big fan of Westworld when it first came out, and by the time it got to Season 4 (the most recent), I found myself hate-watching it.
So about three or four episodes in, I stopped, waited for the season to end, and watched a 30-minute video explaining the whole thing (with clips).
Point is, I've decided I'm going to start doing this more instead of being such a completionist. There's just too much out there to watch these days, and a lot of ways to keep up with a story arc that doesn't involve dedicating hours to something that's not really great.

I’ve made 7 new emails since the suspension bc it keeps asking to verify an email address. All 7 are apparently already registered on twitter despite me just now making them. Account is more than likely gone.
