The most interesting thing to me is the discernible groupings, and the big gaps between them:

Nashville - 1,903,045

Knoxville - 877,104
Baton Rouge - 834,159
Columbia, SC - 825,033

Fayetteville - 537,463
Lexington - 512,650

Gainesville - 284,687
College Station - 258,044
Tuscaloosa - 242,799
Athens/ClarkeCo - 209,271
COMO - 178,271
Auburn/Opelika - 161,604

Oxford/LafCo - 54,374
Starkville/OkhCo - 49,799

Well the greater NW Arkansas area has grown from you, me, and that dog over there, to a good sized area. With room to grow.

Some are saying 1.5 million stretched from Fort Smith to the Missouri border and that seems reasonable.

The problem is that the middle of Arkansas isn't adding a ton of residents while the Eastern half is losing them.

These dont surprise me. These are true college towns where the major industry in the area IS the college. Students, staff and teachers and their families make up the majority of who lives there. Some exceptions but mostly this is true. Gainesville isnt on this list, but probably also fits in this category.

The larger ones are more diverse real cities or larger towns with other industry.

The two Mississippi locations are truck stops with colleges nearby.
