So it's a specifically trained neonatal or pediatric nurse who assist delivering the baby @ home so insurance and other costs don't go through the roof?

It is an ancient tradition.
Some cities have midwifery clinics

Okay I had no clue thanks for answering. Sorry for being stupid.

You weren't stupid at all. The reason I laughed is your response sounded much more intelligent than my answer

I think more of a European thing that's gaining more traction here in the States... me and Carolina can go into bidness together... I'll give the epidural and she catches the baby... so much profit
But to her point about traveling... i was looking online and they were advertising 90/hr 24hr pay for two weeks in Louisiana during the flood for Labor and Delivery/Midwifery type nurses... traveling gets you paid at a high high premium

Actually, no.
It's a specialty that requires more skills along the Obstetric realm versus Neonatology or Pediatrics.
There are a lot of CNM's who deliver their patients at a hospital instead of a home based or birthing center delivery. This is the approach I would take. While CNM's aim to deliver low risk pregnancies, crises do occur that dictate an immediate need for a higher level practitioner..in this case usually both an OB and a Neonatologist. I would MUCH rather be at a hospital performing midwifery should a Cesarean become necessary or if fetal distress or birth complications occur.
The objective of a Midwife assisted birth has absolutely nothing to do with "insurance and other costs." Women usually decide to go the Midwifery route because they want a more personalized, family centered and usually most importantly a natural birthing experience.

You're just pissed bc a natural birth is impeding upon Pharm profits.

ETA: Don't tell anybody...but I opted for pain meds (Merpergan, 75/25 IVP) with my 1st birth, the 2nd one was delivered in the ER so there was no time for meds, and an epidural with my daughter. To hell with hurting when it isn't necessary!
