So, an Australian soldier, and his friend who saved him, are both recuperating after being mauled by a saltwater crocodile.

Both choose to go for a swim in croc infested waters. Now I mean this in the nicest way possible, but who the hell looks at an area filled with elongated carnivorous reptiles and thinks "Well this is the right spot to strip down to my swim trunks and take a dip."

South Florida is home to the American Alligator and the crocodile. I believe the croc is the formidable Nile species.

An alligator prowls through our backyard every now and again. Since we keep chickens, s/he's not a welcome guest, but to this day we've never had a problem with any of the reptiles. Attacks on humans are extremely rare.

Little-known fact: At 22mph, an alligator can run as fast as the world's fastest human. People don't realize these stubby creatures can really get moving.

The last alligator attack I remember hearing about was a spectacularly unlucky guy who fell off a pedestrian bridge... and landed on a gator. I know, gator attacks happen, but you really have to have had a bad day to fall off a bridge and land on an alligator.

That's comically bad luck. My goodness. Hope the man survived.

Some reptiles can be pretty clever.
