Today is the day for the first-ever attempt at altering the path of an asteroid. We can view NASA’s scientific experiment through live streaming.

First off, this isn’t an asteroid that was ever expected to impact Earth. NASA is trying this experiment in case someday they need to deflect an Earthbound-asteroid.

The project is called DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test. DART is NASA’s first attempt to demonstrate the technology to deflect an asteroid. DART will use an unmanned spacecraft that hopefully will hit the targeted asteroid head-on. The energy of the collision will change the movement of the asteroid, according to NASA modeling.

DART launched from Earth in November 2021 and is expected to have its collision with the asteroid at 7:14 p.m. Eastern this evening.

Observations by the Hawaii-based Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) show the Didymos system brightening considerably at the moment of impact. And just afterward, a massive shell of ejected material blasts away from the battered Dimorphos.
