It wasn't bad and was heading to really good status when it was cancelled. The characters were just settling into place and the writing was going well.

It had a tremendous amount of potential that it was just starting to really show. A top notch cast working on it too.

I think fans are also a bit annoyed it really started the downfall of Whedon's TV empire. He handed off creative control for Buffy the Vampire Slayer to focus on Firefly and Buffy proceeded to tank. Partly because the writing was more erratic and partly because Buffy's former network put their best rated show running against it. (which, in the long run, killed both the WB and UPN and forced them into a merger oddly enough.)

Buffy would last a season longer then Firefly but the writing was on the wall and when Sarah Michelle Gellar decided to call it quits it was more of a mercy killing then anything. So Whedon fans lost out on Firefly, which was looking to be great, and Buffy.

I really liked it. It probably isn't deserving of the amount of praise it gets but it was damn good...like top 5 sci-fi shows I've seen. If you like sci-fi or westerns even a little I would suggest checking it out.
