Nothing puts me in the mood for baseball talk more than freezing temperatures and sleet. I know we don't have many here who follow Mizzou's team, but I've been having baseball withdrawal lately so if nothing else, figured I would talk to myself here.
Really interested to see how this years team does. Most have picked Mizzou to finish last in the east. I don't buy it. Our bats won't be any worse than they were last year. I can't imagine our fielding will be any worse than last year either. So if those two areas of the game improve, the next biggest question is how will the pitching compare? We lose Rob Z who was a weekend starter and Jake Walsh who pitched out of the pen. But it really seems to me we have a lot of arms returning so what we lose in Rob Z, we may make up for in numbers. Returning contributors from the past:
Brett Graves: 3.80 ERA in 13 starts and 14 appearances. Pitched the 2nd most innings for the Tigers last year, throwing 71 innings. Graves had an outstanding summer as well, making his leagues All Star game and at one point had a 0.61 ERA with 27 strikeouts to 9 walks.
Keaton Steele: 2.83 ERA. Only 3 starts last year but threw 63.2 innings. Highlight for me was his gutsy performance coming in after Rob Z in the SEC tourney against MSU who played for the national championship.
Jace James: 2.79 ERA. Had 7 starts and threw 42 innings. I was impressed with his outings last year and was surprised he didn't get more starts.
Alex Rash: 4.55 ERA as a freshman last year with 7 starts and 27.2 innings. Started red hot not giving up an earned run through his first couple of outings before arm troubles slowed and halted his contribution. If his arm is healed and he has strengthened it, he may show the biggest improvement of any pitcher from last year.
Eric Anderson: 3.90 ERA in 4 starts and 27.2 innings thrown. Showed he can be a weekend starter a couple years ago but has struggled getting back from arm surgery. If he's healthy, he can again be a legitimate contributor.
John Miles: 2.35 ERA in 23 innings but had zero starts. Also had an outstanding summer and was slated to start the All Star game against fellow Tiger Graves. At last look, he had a 0.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts and 6 walks.
That's 6 guys who all could legitimately be weekend starters and I know little about the guys they have coming in whether from high school or JUCO. With that staff, and with what has to be better bats and fielding, I can see Mizzou doing better in the SEC than last year (not claiming they'll win any titles) and making the SEC tourney, but certainly not finishing last.
Can't wait for the SEC Network to get here so I can actually watch some of the games.

I agree, reedus. I don't see how the hitting could be worse than last year. I'm hopeful we can have a much improved season.
I'm friends with a highly respected former college baseball coach, and we talked about Mizzou's baseball chances in the SEC before the move. I told him I thought baseball would have the steepest hill to climb, of the major sports. I agreed, but said it could also be a very quick hill - we have a very good coach, and with a bit more attention, we could make improvements very quickly. The hurdle we can't do anything about is the weather - being the northern-most SEC school will be a challenge - when they're playing outside in Louisiana, South Carolina and Florida, we still have snow.
I'm excited though - let's see if we can make some strides this year!!

As Kinsler said, though, playing at Mizzou with the cold better prepared him for the big leagues where you're playing in Chicago and Milwaukee and New York and on and on.

Nice shade of lipstick on that pig!

What's the best way to follow Mizzou/Sec baseball? I haven't followed college ball in the past. Do they stream the games on the net or something? Does espn3 have all the games?

Yeah, I tried. At least they seem to have done a better job scheduling this year to get games in early. They go to Florida and North Carolina for the first 10 or so games. First game in Columbia is slated for late February. Just don't see those games being played.

Don't remember many if any games being played on ESPN3. Mizzou streams most if not all of the games but that's through Mizzou Network so you have to pay whatever monthly charge they have. Many times our opponent's school has a free stream or many times someone posts a link to a free stream here. Caycecock was great last year at running a thread for all weekend series for all SEC teams and there was usually a link provided in his thread. Beyond that, I mostly listened to games or followed through gamecast while doing other things.
ETA - So to answer your question, Mizzou makes it very difficult to follow their team compared to other schools. SEC Network will help with that but that's a year away.

Good info, thanks. I can't wait for the SEC network. I might give the mizzou network a try this spring. I'm gonna need something to hold me over until MLB season starts.

314...I got a strange feeling about this upcoming season. Don't know why, just do. Not saying I think we win any titles, but I just have a feeling Mizzou will surprise some this year.

Man I hope you're right reedus!

I think we'll finish better than those preseason rankings suggest. IMO I think we finish at least 5th in the east again and make the SEC tourney.
We've got a fairly tough conference schedule but I think the team will be improved.
Now that I've jinxed us with my prediction we are screwed.

For whatever it's worth, I think the OOC before conference games start sets up much nicer for them as well. Southern Miss and Memphis are not the easiest of games last year. Most all of this years OOC games, including Southern Miss at home this time, are all much more winnable IMO. Should be able to build some confidence and get a better idea of who you are going to rely on once conference games start.

Could someone publish the Mizzou baseball schedule here or link it please?

We do miss LSU, A&M (who will be better) and Bama all together.
