isn't that the stuff usually contracted in hospitals?

Apparently it can be caused from artificial turf...
From wikipedia:
Athletes
In the United States, there have been increasing numbers of reports of outbreaks of MRSA colonization and infection through skin contact in locker rooms and gyms, even among healthy populations.[citation needed] A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine linked MRSA to the abrasions caused by artificial turf.[18] Three studies by the Texas State Department of Health found that the infection rate among football players was 16 times the national average. In October 2006, a high school football player was temporarily paralyzed from MRSA-infected turf burns. His infection returned in January 2007 and required three surgeries to remove infected tissue, as well as three weeks of hospital stay.[19] In 2013, Lawrence Tynes, Carl Nicks, and an unnamed player all of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were diagnosed with MRSA. Tynes and Nicks are not believed to have contracted the infection from each other, but it is unknown if the unnamed player contracted it from either individual.[20]

I think the NFL mentioned the possibility of postponing their game this week. I never knew that stuff was this serious.

It used to be only contracted in hospitals but MRSA is everywhere now. It is no longer associated only with hospital acquired diseases. If you go to WalMart then 60% of the people you come in contact with have been been exposed to it and probably close to half of those exposed to it are colonizing it.
EtA: as far as artificial turf being the culprit its entirely possible if an area that sees more traffic involving abrasions and scrapes is repeatedly seen but it probably has way more to do with the abrasions that the turf causes being in close proximity to similar abrasions in the rehab and conditioning facilities. I guarantee they find the trainers that tape them up before practice/games to be the source of transmission.

I'm taking bacterial physiology and MRSA is a hot topic right now. Really nasty stuff. Wash your hands people!

In there right now as well along with Pathogenic Micro. Makes you not want to go anywhere near a hospital.
Best wishes to Banks on getting healthy!
