No way this is legit. It would be unethical to use people in a legit sociology study for school without informed consent of the participants.
Student: I did a study that shows that people will get upset if you frick with them.

Not saying I believe g_spell, but I know whenever someone tells you that you're being examined for psych/sociology, you act differently. It's not at all uncommon to not tell people all, or any of the info, that a test is using/looking for. He didn't even have to inform people, posting something on twitter/instagram and taking notes of what people say is completely legal as the information is available to everyone.

We are talking ethics of research and not what is or isn't legal. He can screw with all of the people he wants to on Instagram. It just has to be personal. Once he puts the "study" tag on it, he changes the game. The participants need to agree to participate through informed consent, and they need to be able to opt out at any point. These people didn't know it was a study, so they didn't consent and had no way to opt out of his "results". Deception about being in a study is VASTLY different from deception to willing participants about the true nature of the study.
That is why I doubt the study is legit. If the university allows this type of bush league research to pass, we have problems.

IDGAF about g spell. I do GAF about ethics in research.
