18. Mississippi State (9-4)
Points: 407. Previous ranking: 20. Opens: Sept. 1 vs. Stephen F. Austin (ESPNU, 7:30)

Outlook: New coach Joe Moorhead is blessed with one of the most-talented rosters in the SEC. QB Nick Fitzgerald appears to be a perfect fit in former Penn State coordinator’s offense. DL Jeffrey Simmons is one of the conference’s top defenders.

We should be in the top 10.

Highest Preseason Coaches Poll ranking since 1981. A year in which we came off of defeating #1 Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Ole Miss in Jackson.

But I agree, this team should be the 3rd highest rated team in the SEC.

I think maybe a little higher but that's about right. As far as the SEC:

1. Bama
2. UGA
3. Auburn
4. State
5. LSU/USC

Honestly, I've never really cared too much for preseason polls because some of our best seasons began with us unranked (1999, 2010 and 2014 come to mind). But, I was thinking we were ranked around 18 or so in 2001.

Because Preseason Polls are usually too inconsistent for a program like us that they end up ranking State in years we shouldn't be ranked and neglect to rank us in the preseason when we have a baller team.

We aren't Texas where we can win 5 games and the next season be ranked because our name is Notre Dame
