Covid played it's part of course..but recruiting.

We failed getting big guys for two classes. We did not recruit true middle backers so we have a ton of guys who cant stop the run. Then reliance on veteran players who suck over the young guys in positions we did recruit well. All adds up to a shite show of epic proportions.

Nope, not buying that bs excuse in week 3. Week 1, sure a little rust is expected but to get worse going forward from then?? No

Bro..LSU, us, and Bama have historically bad defenses. Even the good ones like Aiburn and UK are average by most year standards. Clearly defenses were hurt more than offenses in the time off. Georgia is about the only good defense and they returned everyone and have depth at every position. They've also not played an offense like Ole Miss yet.

Bama was giving up 21.5 Pts a game and 386 yards a game before Ole Miss. Not exactly terrible
Kiffin knows Bama inside n out, he knew how to attack Saban's Defense.

LSU lost a lot of ppl, just like us.

We lost our Rock in the middle -Reese- Our best DTs -Shuler/Campbell-, Best pass rushers -Greenard/Zuniga- and our best Corner. We never had a good safety and now its showing up more.

We don't have a DT who gets a push in the middle, no consistent pressure off the edge and our LBers are just not good. Safeties still suck and teams are targeting Wilson as well.

Carter needs to be SDE, not a damn DT.
Get those young DTs in the game, Slaton should be a rotational player, not out there on 3rd down.
We've ruined Burney with all the swapping him around between positions bs. Simplify it for him and let him hunt.
Diabate should be off the edge from a backer spot on 3rd down.

Where's Wingo, Hopper ect? If we don't see new faces on the defense this Saturday that'll tell the story that Dan was full of shite with his "We're evaluating everyone" talk

Wingo has been out not sure why. Mullen never released anything.

Im just saying, he's one of many top croots we brought in on D that haven't been seen with the older guys struggling.

A FKN (Frosh)DT, leads our team in interceptions.

Un fkn real

Mullen should be on the phone with Dan Quinn right now

Lazy playcalling is way more to blame than recruiting.

We've recruited better on defense than we have offense.

There are two 5-stars on the defensive line (Cox/Dexter), two "could be five stars" at LB (Diwun Black and Wingo), Chatfield is a 4-star, Bogle is a 4-star. Diabate is a 4-star, David Reese is a 4-star. Trey Dean is a 4-star. Kaair Elam is a 4-star. Ethan Pouncey is a 4-star, Avery Helm, Kimborough, Torrence, Hill, Princely Umanmielen, Summerall are all four star recruits. We have 4 and 5-star recruits in our two deep at every defensive position.

Tra'Vez Johnson, arguably our best defensive player the last two weeks in the secondary, is one of the only ones who is a 3-star and he's literally on the cusp of being a 4-star. (.8800, .89 is generally 4-star range.)Same with Kimbrough (.8855)

It's not a recruiting problem.

Mullen just doesn't throw his young guys in the fire, he's trying to get all of these older guys jobs in the NFL before they go, and obviously it won't pan out.

But throwing the young guys out there when Grantham has checked out is a great way to get a lot of them to start hating Mullen because no one wants to be scapegoated when they have less time in the system and less overall time practicing.

Almost all of these holdovers are McElwain specials starting on defense, and there's no way we could claim Mullen is the problem the first season/class he took over from McElwain which was already terrible.

The guys he's bringing in are good, a new DC and most of his guys starting next year and we'll revisit this thread and say to ourselves: How did the defense get so good so fast?

Diwun Black will be part of next year.

The rest are underclassmen. The entire second string are 4-stars and one 5-star.

Next year the entire second string gets upgraded to first and will all be either RS-SO or Juniors.

It's not a recruiting problem at all, we have the recruits, we're just not going to throw them in situations that could damage them.

It's like none of you remember Feleipe Franks and Michigan, then the trajectory of his career.

Why is it every other team except us can put a Freshman out there and he can be productive?
We always have to wait 2-3 seasons it seems.
Bogle, Diabate, Summerall, Hopper, Burney, Hill, Kimbrough, Dean, Chatfield, Langham and Reese are all 4 star players that have over a year in the scheme.

Listened to GatorDave's podcast, he said he spoke with former players for TG, said the system isn't that complicated

Sidenote, Is Copeland a bust or what?

Copeland's a little banged up, but to answer:

One of my biggest critiques with Mullen is that he is always for his older players. The only way you'll see a lot of underclassmen on the field is if we are decimated by injuries.

That's why Dak played when he was younger, that's the only reason we saw Trask go in.

Honestly, I'd much rather see almost the entire secondary be our underclassmen.

Elam, 'brough, Torrence, Johnson, Hill. Outside of Davis and maybe Stewart, I'd love to see those guys playing more snaps.

At LB I'm more or less, on the DL I doubt we'll ever see the young guys, even though Dexter looks like our best DL.

I didn’t know he was hurt, I just remember when we landed him we thought we had a game breaker.

Safety has been an issue for awhile, I’d say scrap it all and put the young ins out there

Wilson has an X on his back and shouldn’t start again

I will be shocked if Wilson is first string this week.

He had something like 7/8 passes (one was a drop), two touchdowns and 170 yards.

Hurts to even type, because I obviously want him to be successful.

No Greenard no Schuler no Campbell

I hope we get Campbell back soon I think that could help a lot

Grantham could end up getting himself fired if we dont start seeing improvement

People act like Mullen wont fire a DC but he had quite a few at MSU

Manny Diaz 2x, Geoff Collins, Peter Sirmon etc

Ahhh, unless Grantham suddenly starts completely shutting down offenses, he's gone for sure, man.

Not trying to be negative, but that guy is pretty much a dead guy walking.

We’ll see Sat if Mullen is for real or if his presser was all just lip service.

I hear Campbell is back, if that’s the case we can push Carter back out to SDE and Cox back to the Buck. We need to be rotating 5/6 DTs, Slaton cant be doing 30 plus snaps a game at his size n be effective. Slaton, Campbell, Dexter, Humphries and maybe add Lee or another one of the young guys in there.
LB is concerning, Coach needs to play the best instead of the Senior guy. Miller is a big hitter but it’s rarely behind or at the los. He and Houston were both 3 stars, hard for me to believe none of the other LBers can beat them out.
And Safety, damn, try anything at this point.
