Overrating Recruits (relevance of stars)

I was scrolling down the national list of the 247 to see how many recruits in the Top 250 we were probably gong to land (The answer is 8 or 9) when I kept scrolling I saw that 315 prospects were 4 Stars or better. That seemed like a lot to me, so I started scrolling back over the years to see what it's been like before.
2014 - 315 (8 or 9 coming to USC in Top 247)
2013 - 330 (3 in Top 247)
2012 - 353 (5 in Top 247)
2011 - 295 (7 in Top 247)
2010 - 281 (4 in Top 247)
2009 - 274 (9 In Top 247)
2008 - 275 (3 in Top 247...but rankings are not seen, going by Rivals.)
2007 - 178 (9 in the Top 247, but used Rivals)
2006 - 177 (2 in Top 247)
2005 - 124 (Rivals didn't have the 250 Rankings)
So YES, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of players who were rated 4-5 Stars over the past 10 years. 2008 was when it "exploded." So does this diminish the status of being a 4 star recruit, or are there so many recruits in the country that it really doesn't matter?
Also this 2014 class could be the best since the 2009 class. The 2007 class had a few great players, but several of those WR's didn't pan out. I still think this 2015 class might be the GOAT for us though.

Recruiting is a growing industry so you'd expect to see a rise in # of 4*'s - provided they didn't place a limitation on the amount of 4*'s per class - as more analysts get to see more recruits who they may not have seen in the past.
I think this year's class is the big one for us. Looking at 10 or so 4*'s plus a handful of lower ranked guys like Samuel and Smalls who project to be serious impact players.
