"Sometimes we needed a quick man to stick a big guy, the top wide receiver for the other team," Smith said. "They put me there because I was pretty quick. I'd lock him down."

The skill set between the two positions - running back and cornerback - isn't all that dissimilar.

"It's not all brand new, not at all," Smith said. "Footwork translates, and you have to play smart. If you're quick and can use you're speed, you can be very good."

In high school, Smith relished contact. In 295 carries his junior year he never fumbled, something he takes pride in. At cornerback, that physicality remains a plus.

"You have to be physical," Smith said. "If you jam (a receiver) real good, knock them off their route, that works. Defense excites me. It's live. Everybody brings excitement, energy."

I think this is a good move he was 5th on the depth chart and Davis is a Sophomore Wilds is a Redshirt Sophomore Carson is a Junior and Williams a Freshman. So the guys in front of him are also pretty young. Unless an injury occurred he would have waited a long time to see the field.

I like the move and I like the player. Wondering why it took so long when so many of us expected it to happen almost immediately upon his arrival.
