Pre BCS, the only way to win a National Title was to be named the #1 team in the final AP or UPI/Coaches poll.
It may or may not be fair that the bowls weren’t considered by the 2 major polls in those days, but it was what it was.
Alabama has the only legitimate national title claim for the 1964 season.

I love how everyone says Bama shouldn’t claim the championships before the AP and UPI, including Hog fans. Then, those polls don’t count when they didn’t vote for them.
I do agree Bama shouldn’t claim 1941. That one is ridiculous, but everything else is pretty legit.
