Why is Grantham still here?

I’ve read that he is searching for “improved synergy” for the D. Sounds to me like he’s out of ideas. Maybe some yoga classes would help.

Good question. Only Mullen can answer. Grantham is trash. We were lucky last year that we played crap QBs who couldn't hit wide open receivers downfield.

The only reason is that I think Mullen is selling recruits on stability. I've noticed that the defensive players love the hell out of Grantham, and so hopefully he can figure it out this year, and I mean that sincerely. Not just for the team to get better, but because he legitimately seems like the best friend of the players.
Unfortunately buddy coaches rarely work out in the long run.

It’s not total (but certainly a little) bullshite. Meyer was a huge supporter of this kind of teamwork stuff. Like he was kind of an expert in it and it’s one of the reasons his teams were consistently strong. It didn’t always work out for him but it was always his last most important recipe he would talk about on championship teams.
That being said, I don’t but it in this case. Our defense could barely line up right or on time last year. I mean, if you can’t correct that all the “teamwork” in the world won’t matter.

Mullen wants him here. The pitchfork and torches crowd forget what he had as defense in 2919 when we were leading the country in sacks until after midseason when key injuries hurt us.
As I have stated before in other replies...we played a lot of frosh DB/LBs and then redshirted most after they played 4 games to save their freshmen status
Almost all of you dont study the roster carefully (I do) You might learn why so & so player didnt do anything on the field. We had injuries to some frosh and this year we have guys who now have 2 yrs on campus..which is huge, can you remember your frosh year? It takes a year to learn where half the building are.
I expect to see improvement overall on defense. Moon is back from injury and provides another pass rusher as a senior...add in Ventrell Miller, Brenton Cox, Mohamed Diabate, Khris Bogle + players who have tore it in practice...Derek Wingo, Ty'Ron Hopper, Antwuan Powell and Diwun Black have the front seven looking good with DL:
Dexter Garvin, Zach Carter, Jalen Lee + another group showing off in practices, Antonio Shelton & Daquan Newkirk two senior transfers who have been shaving for fours, Desmond Watson...unmovable object true frosh, Lamar Goods, Jaelin Humphries, and several others who will get some rotation time.
Kiir Elam is an AA stand out who will be a first rounder, Trey Dean will be a safety/rover as a senior, Rashad Torrence is solid at safety and showed his skillset til injury bug hit, Tre Vez Johnson played a lot last year and is now a true soph at CB Jason Marshall is a true frosh that was sought by everybody and rated a top 3 CB in the country, Jordan Young was also sought after as CB + guys tearing up practice: Kamar Wilcoxson, Jahari Rogers, Mordecai McDaniel, Donovan McMillion to name guys who mostly redshirted last year.
So this is why I expect improvement on defense..We now depth and the coaches can let the bench be a motivator.

None of what you said matters if people can’t get lined up right or on time.
Also we had a ton of experience in the secondary last year. Shawn Davis, Donovan Stiner, and Brad Stewart were all long term starters and seniors. Trey Dean and Marco Wilson were very experienced juniors. Kair Elam was good and Jaydon Hill quietly had a solid sophomore year. So with all that experience and talent why were we so bad on the back end?
Because of misalignment, blown assignments, slow recognition, and piss poor in game adjustments.
All of that is primarily due to bad coaching and piss poor preparation.
I’m so tired of this inexperienced excuse. We are actually more inexperienced this year than last year.

I’d recommend you read this.

Holy shite great analysis but fricking depressing as hell.

Yep. Grantham is who he is, an average defensive coordinator who is wayyyyy overpaid. Didn’t like the hire to begin with and been calling for his head after his defenses had a 8-14 third down rate in the 2018 uga game (I think most if not all of uga’s touchdowns came on third down in that game) and a 12-17 third down rate in the 2019 game. “Third and Grantham” is sadly a very real thing. Now it unfortunately falls on Mullen if we see more of the same this year.

I always felt like Grantham just never trusted his guys to play on the line. How many times were we lined up 10 yards off of a play where it was 3rd and 3? Same with 3rd and long, we almost never brought pressure, just sat there and waited for the QB to pick the right guy.
Honestly, I don't mind getting beat playing man and bringing the heat.
But holy frick do I hate getting beat by a simple slant when we leave the play wide open.

You mean something like this?

I mean I understand what Grantham is trying to do but I don’t understand why you would call it on 3rd and medium. Call it on 3rd and long when you’re trying to keep everything underneath. He’s expecting Moon (why the hell is he playing in coverage anyway?) to pass off the first slant to the MLB and pick up the second slant coming after. Grantham’s asking wayyy too much from a guy that should really be rushing the passer. Makes no sense…line up 6-7 yards off the ball and basically concede a slant for a first down. Smh, I’m not sure what irritates me more, that, or only rushing 3 on critical 3rd downs. This guy makes nearly 2 million a year to have the worst defense since WW2. WTF

Or how about this play…
I seriously think Grantham’s an idiot. He tries to bring the SS into the box to fake a blitz and disguise the coverage, when in reality he just makes it hard for the SS to make a play on the ball when he’s busy busting his arse to get back in the other half of the 2 deep. And btw, if there’s one time you wanna heat up the qb with pressure I feel like it would’ve been in this exact situation, 3rd & 14 with a qb who is not very good. Instead Mathis is able to make the easiest read of his life on a skinny post right down the seam. I don’t claim to have anywhere close to the amount of knowledge Grantham has when it comes to defense but my goodness he does some of the dumbest shite I’ve ever seen. Anyway, that’s my take on Grantham for tonight. Let’s hope 2021 is a whole helluva lot better. Go Gators

I still think the bigger issues are that we couldn’t get plays in fast enough or line up fast enough or in the right spots. Can’t play press coverage when you barely have time to line up.

Nah, press is easy. "Hey, go earn your scholarship, you got #x, make it work because we're going to blitz."
That's it.
His problem has been, all year, his inability to get his guys to understand the zone scheme he wants, and not bringing the heat when he ought to.
College ball has evolved to a level that you may need to literally go man to man and follow a guy rather than pass the player off.
Anyway, hopefully he gets his shite straight because we can't have another year like that.

Grantham also let two secondary coaches go...its a no brainer that you dont fire two position coaches mid season, who is going to coach them?
There should be improvement this year on defense...at least a noticeable improvwement...if not then I will be at the front of the fire Grantham cheerleading group.

True. One of Meyer’s biggest failures here was giving Steve Addazio the reigns as OC in that 2009 season. That team was loaded and our offense was painfully vanilla. Sure we went undefeated in the regular season, but we barely squeaked by some average teams that year.

Thankfully we just got a CB transfer, too.

Another thing we have to realize is that by having a wide open aerial attack and no ground game you put pressure on defenses and that's a fact.
One big problem we had last year was that our upperclassmen in the secondary all had their minds on the NFL. To me, its addition by subtraction. No more Stiner or Stewart's disappearing acts...Shawn Davis was productive, but injuries kept him out of a lot of games.
I will repeat this...expect to see improvement on defense and no one has answered my statement about 2019 and fans only got down on Grantham that year after our two best pass rushers went down mid season...bless Grenard for playing injured at the end of the year.

What about 2019? The defense was good but nothing special. Uf played two games that season against 10+ win teams and lost both games largely because of the defense. It was not ufs toughest schedule ever. Probably the best game all year was against auburn.
