Sure, all those D-linemen prospects can just switch to water polo and gymnastics, or go to some obscure college with no facilities and never be heard from again, or learn to code.

If you have a draft, you’re making kids go to schools they don’t want to go to and may not have the ability to perform well enough academically to make their grades, and for 98% of the players, the most valuable thing they’ll get from the scholarship is an opportunity to get a degree. If you have to pay them, then the current problem will only get worse, unless you have a salary cap, recruiting will be all about who has the biggest wallet and richest boosters, and many programs couldn’t afford to pay players at all, and would have to drop football or a bunch of other sports entirely. How does that make things better for the players?
