Outside a few bowls, there was no such thing as automatic bowl tie-ins. However, that system also didn't result in players deciding to skip them. But, the big difference is, very few players got rich playing football back then and they also had a lot more pride in their schools and the game than players do now.

The NCAA didn't even count bowl game stats until 2002.
